I bought the book after reading the ecstatic comments by additional readers. I was reasonably disappointed when I read through it. Granted, the art galleries, musees, and cloisters at the beginning of the book are promising, assuming they are magnificent on their own and not completely out of the way of your itinerary; then the book gets into a lot of back alleys, fleeting passages, and cemeteries (every city has persons). I don’t know what additional frequent travellers are looking for, but if I take the distress to travel to a gorgeous city such as Paris, I would want to be delighted with exquisite experiences in culture (friendly people; friendly shops that cater to the discerning; truly wonderful places to eat for genteel travellers who wouldn’t be changing for dinner) and art (not just inside, but the most comfortable spots for admiring the view outside, say the Tour Eiffel at dusk, or a magnificent architectural piece in the morning).
I am not being critical, I know every city has persons gems. Let me illustrate with an example: in Hong Kong, take a fleeting scenic drive (assuming one is not inclined to hike in the morning from the Peak – also a fantastic experience) to have afternoon tea at the Verandah at Repulse Bay (part of the Peninsula group) on weekdays and shop there. The view is gorgeous and there won’t be a crowd pushing you nor a long wait at the cashier.
Another example: in Singapore, the Raffles Hotel has a colonial nostalgia that whisks you back magically in time. You could nearly smell Somerset Maugham’s cigar from that gentleman who is reading the paper in a silent confront of the hotel lobby.
I like sightseeing in Paris. But I was hoping the leader knew where the gems were.

These are the kind of experiences I seek on every trip. But I only have a week in Paris so thank you so much for doing the “leg work” for me.

I was looking forwards to photos that would wet my appetite; that were unique and made me long to go back to Paris. They were neither unique nor inspiring. An appealing small book but if I were in a book store and leafing through it, I would have past.

Selected this up on a whim for a gift. A family tree freind went to Paris for a month and loved every day. Sadly her camera broke a week into her trip. She was so pleased since she went to many places in this book but did not have her camera.
