Taking vampire diaries fanfic of yore and arranging names around as to obscure the character origins is rather cheap of an leader in some ways. Say what you will about original plots and the like, it’s still ripping off a name else’s characters or character idiosyncrasies that were already customary by the previous leader. I’m all for influences and springboards for budding or not-so-budding writers, but some things are going too far. That being said, the prose is, and permanently has been, very well done by this leader. Too terrible I can’t reward more stars due to lack of integrity.

The Tale
Miranda Grey has a gift for composition. She is able to see people’s emotions and manipulate them with composition. It is the only time she gets relief from the constant bombardment of people’s emotions and deep dark secrets. Every night she drinks till she passes out, wakes up and repeats. Miranda is neither in the regular world nor in the Shadow World. She is unable to look people in the eyes for the dark secrets are more revealed when she looks into eyes. One night on her way home four men jump her and only leads to death. David Solomon saves Miranda and shields her empathy for the first time in her life. David is the Prime of the south, with his new law – No killing humans – a war is brewing with mad vampires.
Thoughts
I was leery to read this, being the leader’s first fiction – paranormal romance. I didn’t make a mistake in buying it! The thought takes new and ancient and combines them into a fantastic PR! I couldn’t place this book down! That is my favorite kind of book – where you pick it up and can’t place it down, it’s over before you know it! The characters are very likable, and all grow throughout the tale. The plot is simple yet fantastic and captivating! I can’t wait for the next! This can’t be the end of their tale. I know there is another book; I just don’t know whether it’s the same main characters or a new couple. It’s an simple read, dark and tasty! I highly recommend this book for what it’s for!

I’ve been reading Dianne Sylvan’s blog series Shadow Agency for the last two years and I’m so glad she’s gotten her first novel published. Queen of Shadows bares many similarities to SA but it’s different enough that I wasn’t constantly thinking I was reading a continuation of SA or a fan fic of sorts. I like her writing style and her sense of humor. She’s a fantastic leader and I can’t wait till the next book in the series comes out!

Once I ongoing this book I couldn’t place it down. I establish myself rooting for Miranda from the very beginning. She survives a brutal attack and I felt that the leader does a wonderful job of showing her might and healing while at the same time interjecting humor and real growth. Many times in Urban Fantasy women are shown as either hard as nails/don’t need anyone’s help, or very weak and irritating so it was very refreshing to have a character who rebounds from tragedy in a way that is realistic. I can’t wait for the next book from this leader.

Past-tense, third-person, POV of Miranda.
I usually don’t read vampire romances. They all seem very cliché and the romance is nearly permanently hot and heavy. This book was not like this. This book was incredible. Miranda’s growth as a character was wonderful. I loved how the characters relied on each additional but were not dependant on each additional, if that makes any sense. For example, during the final battle [SPOILER] Miranda passes the composition room and says “Bastards better not hurt my piano,” and Sophie responds “That’s what you’re apprehensive about right now?” Miranda recognizable that David was fully capable of taking care of himself [END SPOILER]. Miranda’s development from a woman who was mentally unstable and on a path to a mental hospital to the strong and confident woman who refused to cower and let others protect her was extremely well done.
The romance was brilliant. I’m really tired of the vampire romances where the vampires are hyper-sexual and come on extremely strong. This book wasn’t like that, and I’m pretty sure David still wouldn’t have acted that way even if [SPOILER] Miranda hadn’t been raped at the beginning of the book [END SPOILER].
I was very surprised to learn that this was Ms Sylvan’s first novel. It was very well written and did not feel like a freshman effort. I will look for this leader in the future.
