New York Times bestselling leader Nora Roberts deftly blends the perfect formula of romance and suspense in this addictively compelling novel of a woman whose career, marriage, and very life may depend on her never learning the truth about her past. . . .
Emma McAvoy may have grown up in the limelight, but some secrets are hidden in a darkness no light can reach. Now on the verge of a successful career, and having fallen in like with the man of her dreams, Emma is looking to the future. Yet it’s the past that is about to catch her from behind.
For Emma, her childhood had been nearly like a rags-to-riches fairy tale—until the tragic night that changed her family tree forever. But what Emma thinks she knows about that terrible night and the man she’s about to marry is only half the truth. The additional half is locked away in the last place she’d ever reflect to look: her own memories. It’s a mystery a handsome and relentlessly driven homicide detective needs to solve in a case that’s haunted him for years . . . and a secret a name will kill to keep.

There aren’t many books by NR that I don’t like, as she is so talented and writes on a variety of informed topics, i.e. ballet, horse racing, Irish history, among just a few.
But this one wasn’t rich in its tale and the characters failed to ring right, especially to their professions. For instance, I never could accept Brian in the role of lead singer for a band, he just didn’t fit this profile at all. And I wanted to feel his composition, his singing, but that never happened. We readers should have felt the composition as if we were in the audience, or at least off stage.
In most of NR’s books, the reader truly comes to know the characters, but not so in this one. Brian and the rest were dull, and I really didn’t like the way this tale unfolded.

This has to be the worse Nora Roberts book, I have bought. I did not even end the book. Nora Roberts can do much better. To much violence, use of drugs, and more four letter words than was necessary. I usually read and pass on books, this one I did not even end, it went into the trash. Did not want to waste my time with it. I was so disappointed after enjoying Vision In White.

Plenty of action and filled with 80’s and 90’s issues but I couldn’t get past all of the typos! After one or two typos per page it was hard to focus on the plot.

This novel is excellent, but not brilliant, as is Carolina Moon, River’s End, and some of Nora Robert’s romantic thrillers.
