Product Description
At the age of seventy-three, New York Times bestselling leader Sylvia Browne is ready to tell the whole tale of her extraordinary life. In Psychic, we meet the woman behind the public figure: from the child getting her first visits from the spirit world to the teenager doubting her own sanity; from the new mother living through staggering highs and lows to the burgeoning celebrity, and, ultimately, the successful, happily married woman she is today. Filled with never-before-told tales and otherworldly encounters, Psychic is a riveting account of how Sylvia Shoemaker, a traditional girl from Missouri, became world-legendary psychic Sylvia Browne.
Nothing is off-limits. Sylvia tells the small-known truths behind her three failed marriages—including physical abuse, bankruptcy, and officially authorized troubles—and the financial and emotional hurt they wreaked. She revisits her personal demons and describes her physical challenges, including her relatively recent discovery that she’d suddenly gone blind in one eye. And then there is the greatest surprise of all: Sylvia tells how, once she had reached her seventies, and believed her romantic life was over, the real Mr. Right finally—intolerably—showed up.
While the press has freely, regularly bitterly, weighed in on Sylvia’s most painful tales, she has remained silent—until now. Unlike any additional book Sylvia has written, Psychic reaches deep beneath the surface of her life, including professional and personal experiences that she is sharing publicly for the first time. With candor, warmth, and a fantastic deal of humor, Sylvia Browne has written the singularly captivating tale of a life lived in two worlds, filled equally with harsh worldly realities and mesmerizing spiritual insights.

A Life in Two Words: EPIC.FAIL. Sylvia’s track record as a “psychic” is not very inspiring. I suggest looking up James Randi and doing a bit of research on some of Sylvia’s howlers. It would be amusing and I would salute this fraud’s success at raking in the cash off her dupes IF–if–it weren’t for the fact that her victims pay dearly for her ’services,’ and that she passes herself off as a genuiune ‘psychic.’ Tellingly, she refuses to take Randi’s “Million Dollar Challenge,” which, if she were really legitimate, would remove all doubt.

Get ready. If you follow numerology, I am a double “1″ and a sun sign Scorpio — I feel compelled to say what reflect. I have my moon and ascendant in Libra, so I judge in being nothing less than honest. Uranus conjuncts my ascendant — so I really like the paranormal, what can I say? And finally, both of my parents are Geminis — I have been trained to go on reasonably a bit when I write.
Here it comes … and I truly don’t care what kind of comments I get … I’ve got Pluto, the god of the underworld on my side … (-;
FACT: This is a wonderful book, and it is well worth the fee of admission to get a glimpse into this woman’s very personal life. Buy the book — you won’t regret it.
You know, I see so many reviews all over Amazon where people whine and complain about petty small things in books, “I wish it had been this way, I wish it had been that way”.
It is very, very hard to write a book, much less a memoir. It is extremely hard to look for the key to one’s life in the dark, rather than under the lamppost, and then to place it all out there for everybody to read (and viciously pick apart). Of course, many people can blab on and on about “My ex did this to me, my friend did that to me” — just look at a random blog — but make it appealing, poignant, amusing, and educational? No, not just anyone can do that … but Sylvia Browne and Lindsay Harrison can, and DID.
This is a courageous book. I got to know Sylvia by reading this and, you know what? This woman is full of wisdom and practical advice. This book inspired me to be a better person and a better mom. What more could you question from a memoir? Not to mention that this book is also laugh-out-loud amusing at times, too. Sylvia has an brilliant sense of humor.
“But you’re not talking about the psychic stuff!” I can hear all the Geminis and Virgos adage. “She’s a fake, talk about that!” I hear the Tauruses muttering. “Your review is too long, get to the ghosts already!” the Sagittarians are yelling (yeah, yeah … whatever). That’s because you don’t have to judge in anything paranormal whatsoever to delight in this book. That’s right — this book stands on its own merits … no belief in psychics is required.
I’m not going to go into any analysis of any of the paranormal topics in the book. As Sylvia says, “Take what you want, and place the rest”. I did delight in persons parts of the book, but they were not central for me; they were just a nice added plus to the narrative, as I delight in reading about her work.
Here is what I am going to go into: I want people to stop calling Sylvia evil. Take a look into her eyes in her photos. There is no evil there (as an FYI to persons who may not be aware, you can see evil in people’s eyes … look into the eyes of the latest murderer posted on Foxnews — you’ll see the evil if you look).
I also want people to stop calling her greedy because she wrote this book. Do you honestly reflect people make a lot of money from writing books? Bestsellers make some money, but really … you don’t make all that much money unless you are Dean Koontz, Stephen King, etc. and even then, you have to keep cranking them out or your money evaporates. Sylvia probably won’t make too much money from this book; she wrote it because it was time for the book to come into being; like any additional creative project, its time had come. And also, so what if she charges $800 or whatever it is for her readings? In California, $800 is not even that much money (cost of living) and anyway, professionals charge money for their services. It’s called doing business.
And finally, to persons who call her a fraud … yeah, she’s been incorrect before. So has my doctor — last week, as a matter of fact. So has my artist, tailor, choreographer, etc, etc. etc. every professional is incorrect sometimes! We live in an imperfect world! No one is perfect … and Sylvia has said that many times. People need to get over droning on and on about “she was incorrect about the color of the Pope’s socks in 1989″ or whatever it is that gets people’s panties in a bunch. Yes … I know about the missing kid case, and the coal miners (both very sad events, by the way)… but, she was not trying to be malicious … she was just incorrect! It happens, folks. Get over it.
Anyway, I could go on and on, but I’ll shut up now. Just buy the book — you don’t have to judge in psychics, all you have to do is read it with an open mind. You might just learn something …

This book is a fascinating read from start to end. If you are an avid Sylvia Browne fan, many of the tales in this book will not be new to you, but there are tales that have never been told. Sylvia writes with wit and humility. The thoughts and beliefs Browne writes about are truly extraordinary. Sylvia offers truly helpful advice when it comes to psychic development that honestly worked for me. As an avid researcher of the paranormal, I must say that Sylvia has a fantastic deal of insight to offer. Read this book with an open mind and delight in the ride.

What an extraordinary life this woman has had. It’s incredible that she has been able to accomplish all that she has in her career including raising her children virtually alone and had the behind-the-scenes nightmares to suffer at the same time. Sylvia has helped so many people (myself included) with her philosophy, her books, and over 50 years of readings that she is truly an inspiration to us all. I’ve permanently admired Sylvia for never trying to shove her beliefs down anyone’s throat, and her statement of “take what you want and place the rest” is one I’ve regularly used myself in sharing my own beliefs with others. For me, the fact that she states so regularly that she is not perfect and is learning in this life like the rest of us is what makes her truly approachable and down-to-planet. A fantastic read and one I’d recommend to everyone whether you’re a “believer” or not

Ms. Browne seems to attract both ardent fans and harsh critics, and so I suspect this space will be filled with reviews from both soon. I’m neither, so I’ll try and just review the book, as a replacement for of her. My bottom-line opinion of this memoir is in my review title – I reflect it’s a excellent read, whether you are a fan of Ms. Browne’s or not, although I would personally have liked a small more personal sharing, and fewer case overviews.
I am very interested in both the intuitive arts and spiritual memoir, especially women’s life tale, and I review both types of books regularly, so this one seemed a natural fit. But, I have only read one additional of Ms. Browne’s books, Secrets & Mysteries of the World, which was fantastic fun, although nothing particularly new. Since I am not very familiar with her additional books, I can’t comment on how much material here is really new. Coming to it lacking much prior background on her, I establish it a compelling tale of a women who has lived multiple lives within this one, recreating her self regularly as her situation demanded it.
The first three chapters of this book were really my favorite, when she describes her childhood and troubled first marriage. She discusses how she learned her psychic gifts and how she learned to deal with them in a challenging family tree environment, as well as within a Catholic school. On a personal level she at first just wanted a ‘normal’ life, and this led her to a terrible first marriage, which she struggled within for many years before finally calling it quits.
After this she devotes reasonably a bit of time to various cases she worked on as her psychic practice grew, particularly tales of ghosts that she communicated with. Although entertaining, I thought these middle chapters got a bit long, and the personal voice and tie with the reader got lost. She raised her children during this period of her life, but she doesn’t chat about motherhood much, or how (or if) being psychic influenced her parenting, which I was personally hoping she would do.
She also doesn’t take up most of the criticism regularly levied at her, particularly related to cases she is accused of botching. She does make it clear that she is not omniscient, that her psychic gifts are not infallible, and that she is not particularly diviner about events in her own life. She also does briefly chat about the fraud charges that were levied against both her and her second spouse.
Overall, I establish the book a bit careful, the closer it got to current events especially. She seemed silent to share too much, and I was regularly left with the feeling there was ‘more to the tale’. Still, there are many fascinating tales in here for anyone interested in spirit communication, ghosts, and psychic abilities in all-purpose. And there is no question Ms. Browne is a strong women, and one who has risen from the ashes multiple times. Her strong personality and roller-coaster life made it a compelling read despite the disappointments, in my view, and so I went with four stars.
