From the International Thriller Writers’ Interview With Leader Mark Nykanen

Thrillers includes a wide range sub-genres. Primitive, by Mark Nykane, explores the world of environmental terrorism. Mark flourished in his career as an on-camera investigative correspondent for NBC, regularly toiling in undercover assignments, and winning four Emmys and an Edgar for his achievements. He learned the world of environmental threats firsthand.
In Primitive, Sonya Adams, a maturing model, is kidnapped by a neo-primitive cult sequestered in the remote beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Cult members call their compound Terra Firma, and want to draw attention to their doomsday environmental message, which is based on a terrifying government document that they’ve obtained. They want to use Sonya as their spokeswoman in podcasts, assuming that her beauty and presence will enhance their chilling message.
Surrounded by majestic mountains and pictorial forests, Sonya is outraged by what is done to her, and fights for her life against her kidnappers. But she also faces dangers unknown to her from huge energy companies and the government, which plot to try to silence her along with her kidnappers. The heroine’s only hope might be her alienated daughter, Darcy, who is determined to rescue her mother, requiring a hunt akin to tracking down Islamic militants. But Darcy, in turn, is stalked by a ruthless gift hunter, Johnny Bracer, who plans on following the young woman to her mother so he can aver a huge reward.
We questioned Mark a few questions about himself and his writing:
If you were stranded on a desert island, what one book would you like to have with you and why?
I would want the latest, most definitive history of the world, hopefully heavy in natural science and cosmology. Why? Because I could learn while I am stranded.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what one character from your book would you like to keep you company and why?
I would choose Darcy because she has a spirit much like my own: curious, a fighter, relentless. I know your readers will reflect it must be sexual attraction. Truly, that’s not the case..
That said, Darcy is an attractive young woman. [Editor: h-m-m]
Who is your favorite thriller character in the genre?
I know it’s permanently diplomatic to point to the characters made by additional authors when you’re questioned this question, but the blunt truth is that my favorite characters are the ones who have come to life for me and changed me as much as they’ve changed one another on the page. So with that in mind, I’d have to say that my favorite characters are Sonya and Darcy in Primitive, because they have such a conflict-ridden relationship, yet they’re both very much affected by the deep feelings that they hold for each additional – and by the tumultuous events that quickly overtake them. But I also like Ashley Stassler and Diamond Girl in The Bone Parade. Again, it’s probably the relationship between the two of them that captivates me most. They are both extraordinarily willful characters who come up against each additional continually. Diamond Girl utterly shocked me – and readers, too, I should add – time and again.

This was pretty excellent. I managed to read it in one day, which goes to show that it kept me in suspense. This leader is one to be watching

I became immersed in this book nearly from the very first paragraph. I could not place it down and could not stop reading until I finished it. I establish the tale well-constructed and well-written. It was an exciting action-adventure with a message that is significant today and should cause us to step back a minute and really consider the hurts that are being done to our environment by our over-dependence on oil and coal. I’m just a normal semi-retired person trying to get along in this crazy world as bestI can but this book helps me better know, I reflect, why some people have been pushed to the edge and beyond. Ultimately though it is a hopeful reminder that we can and should strive, as a country on the world stage, to better conserve our world for the generations that follow us – that the task while hard is not impossible.

Mark Nykanes’s Primative is as tense a book I’ve ever had the immense pleasure and fantastic privilege of reading. It has a knock your socks off knock out punch from the first page and doesn’t stop until the last page is done. Come take the scariest ride of your life on this Eco-Thriller, apocalyptic roller coaster ride, where the lines between villain and hero have never been thinner and where the final outcome could be the fate of the world as we know it. We have never had more unlikely heroines in Sonya Adams middle-aged model and her multi-pierced, multi-faceted daughter Darcy, but as you get better acquainted with them you’ll see just what stuff they’re made of.
Mark is an exceptional storyteller, with dramatic, dynamic descriptive dialogue that takes your senses through many excruciating and exciting journeys and makes his images jump off the pages. He takes his readers through a wild untamed natural wonderland filled with not only natural terrors but human as well. His wonderful characters enhance the tale and he is intimately acquainted with each one, they are all well defined and multidimensional. His tale line/plot is unique and yet something that could easily wind up on the front pages of any major newspaper or head lines of any newscast.
This incredible work of fiction will take you through many emotions, not all of them simple to bear but you will none-the-less find yourself unable to stop turning pages to find out what happens next. It is certainly not a read for the faint of heart, you will find violence here, but it is intricate to the tale and in my opinion very necessary. So if you like your novels to be edge of your seat exciting with nail biting, heart racing thrills get ready for the ride of your life.

I didn’t expect to become so engrossed in this thriller about a kidnapped fashion model who finds herself on examination for her career work. A radical group takes her in order to make a political statement about global warming. While I don’t agree with the politics or the method, the leader has made a stunning adventure. I had to read it all in one sitting in order to find out what happened to the victim.
It has all the ingredients to make a terrific movie. I won’t spoil any of it for you, but there was one segment in which a pursuing investigator used questionable methods to interrogate people, and that seriously creeped me out. When I reread this, I’m going to turn pages very rapidly through that section!
The ending is a small over the top, but plausible in view of historic events with similar things (reflect Ruby Ridge, Waco).

Primitive, by Mark Nykanen, shows this novelist’s craft at its best. Because the tale told in the book involves a primitive group that is trying to publicize the dangers of global warming through kidnapping a past-her-prime supermodel, there’s a risk that the tale will get bogged down in technical discussions and political opinion. But Nykanen uses his considerable skill as a storyteller to keep events moving at a breakneck pace. Many plain characters populate this novel, and the tale dramatizes a struggle that news junkies are seeing played out every day in the media. That should attract many readers, and inspire widespread discussion of the issues highlighted in the tale.
