Lily Chen is the queen of the reversible cables. Though some of the patterns have been previously published, it is wonderful to have them all in one place.
Her explanations are that of the skilled teacher that she is. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in cable techniques. I personally will use a reversible cable every chance I can. I have nearly finished the reversible cable shawl in Kidsilk Haze in a pretty celedon green. It is gorgeous!

Haha, I remember my first encounter with cable knitting. My mom took a knitting course at Sears (yes, SEARS) and I was intensely jealous because I was trying to knit from about age 2 onward. And she came home with a swatch of a cable and it was magic! How did she get that flat knitting to make a three-dimensional small twisty bit? When she showed me how you go one part of the knitting off the needle, and knit the next stitches out of order, then knit the stitches you’ve held back, it was VOILA! Huh! That’s it?
Well, over the years, I learned that’s NOT all cables can do. You can do single lines, all over, make the shape of the endless barchans of the Sahara in a wavy fabric, combine them with lace, imitate them with cords, you name it. Lily Chin’s book goes over traditional, charted cables (as in Aran knits), reversible cables (suitable for shawls and scarves) and imaginative cables, in color, or done in cords and additional ways.
She demonstrates which yarns show off which kind of cable to best advantage and many patterns are included. One I particularly liked is a gorgeous man’s vest, with traveling stitches done in the Bavarian or Tyrolean style. Pine trees make the center panel and gorgeous broad and flat cables travel up each side. It’s done in alpaca and it’s reason enough to buy this book. But you also get bags, socks, hats, hoodies and shawls. Very nice patterns. In fact, 15 patterns in all and a lot of design advice so you can make your own creations. There is PLENTY in this book to tempt any knitter.
