I thought this book was poorly written. It was a excellent tale line, but lacked creativity. Was bare minimum with what was going on—no excitement. I will not read any more by this leader.

Just finished PORTAL. No need to go into a synopsis, it’s been done better than I could do. Want to concentrate on how I feel. I didn’t realize until half way thru that the book was part of a trilogy. Felt a small cheated in the end. Know that the writer had to tease the reader into reading the next book. Sorry to say, as of right now, I can’t say that I cared enough about the characters to want to buy the next book. Oh sure, I’m curious as to how the portal work and the whole ‘come find me two years ago’ scenario — but again, not enough to buy the book. Trying to know where the main character was coming from, she was just unadorned ole annoying in the end. It’s not a terrible book and the storyline is appealing. Reflect I need to reflect on it more before coming to my final choice on if I’ll be reading the 2nd book.

This was not reasonably what I expected. Not terrible, just different. Well worth two dollars, mind you. Just keep telling yourself it only cost two bucks, that helps. It’s not really SF, I would certainly call it contemporary chick-fantasy-lite. Mostly, it was a lot of day-dreaming in the character’s head. Also, it is really at least partly a teen book. I was thrown off when the main character was talking about her doctoral thesis (its called a dissertation in the U.S.) but she didn’t feel like a person who was terribly educated. When I hang out with science profs and doctoral candidates, they are normally NOT tossing girl-girl kisses around in bars–they simply aren’t invited to parties that are that excellent. But, like I said, it is a fantasy. The women are muscle-bound yet tiny and pretty, and the men are handsome. Right to the end, I had been hoping for some cool twist, but did not get one.

Clearly I am in the minority here, but I must say I was unimpressed with this first book of the Portal series. It wasn’t dreadful (hence the three stars) and certainly had some readable moments. But for the most part, aside from the super unique premise and a strong beginning, I establish the writing choppy with some pretty rough and unrealistic dialog (especially between the teen characters who tended to sound like adults rather than kids). Frankly, and I’ve said this before in a few additional indie YA novel reviews, I am getting tired of the first-person point of view a la Twilight. In my mind, it tends to make all but the most well-written tales seem homogenous, regardless of the setting and plot. But if the writing is strong and the plot is strong then I can get past the first-person thing. If you like indie first-person urban-fantasy/sci-fi, try anything by Amanda Hocking (my current favorite). If, but, you are looking for something to pass the time, then this would be a excellent choice.

I downloaded a sample of this book because the fee was right and it sounded intriguing. The sample (and the first third or so of the book) were fantastic and I was really sucked in. Sorry to say, the rest of the book didn’t measure up. I could well judge that Arizona wanted to keep her confusion to herself initially (after all, she’s a teenager that doesn’t have a fantastic relationship with her mother), but once she establish that her mother knew what was going on, I didn’t find either her or her mother’s actions and reactions the slightest bit believable from that point forwards. Everyone just kind of ignored the situation and went on with their normal lives for several more days lacking discussing it??? This plot development just didn’t work for me and as a result, I felt let down by the rest of the book. Too terrible, because the leader has a excellent way with words and certainly knows how to draw the reader into her tale.
