I thought the book was very BLAH and BORING. The writing was cut rate to say the least. FLAT. Monotone. One dimensional. What characters? What action? What tale?

I read nearly all of the reviews of this book and was very excited about reading it. I’m on page100 and so far NOTHING has happened. I’ve exhusted all authors I like such as Pollock, ludlum, land Cussler and Cornwell. I’m just glad I didn’t buy more of Hunter. How can approx.50 people be right and 1 disappointed. I don’t know. But I do know if you like action don’t read or try to read this book.

There’s no doubt that the pace of this revenge tale cracks along, and that the dialogue is smooth and snappy.
Sorry to say there is no insight into the psychological effects of murder upon persons who are questioned to kill. In fact, there is one passage where the dehumanisation of persons who are being selected off by the novel’s hero is so pronounced, I wondered how he would retain my empathy.
This book feeds into the treacherous attitude that addressing the ghosts of one’s past demands the use of controlled and effective violence. This is a fantasy which of course lead to sequels for Hunter, but certainly no peace for his hero.
I suspect Hunter’s an extremely intelligent leader and could easily spectacle more insight; but would it bring him as much success?

Largely well written the tale is so derivative it seems less a homage, than a cut and paste job. Lord Jim, for the torture that plays on vanity, the seven rescuers which has been done over and over, the heart of darkness for the river, and a Kurtz like character who has gone nuts, and so it does.
The gang of ancient men is pretty offensive to the memories of the people involved. Why select characters drawn from real life, but then fictionalize them in ways that seem unlikely to be in character. And they wouldn’t be a dream team. It is like the recent DC sniper issue of whether the “snipers” had to have training. You don’t need training to make a 100 yard shot, you don’t need legendary marksmen. You need folks you have known a long time, presumably from Swagger’s military past. Criss-crossing the country, recruiting a movie star, it is laughable.
As usual the gun stuff, is only partly right, despite the raft of advisors. He really needs a gun editor or something, since he seems to be partly permanently writing for a gun savvy audience. As Bridget Fonda says in Jackie Brown about her gunrunning keeper “He’s just repeating stuff he’s heard. He’s no more a gun practiced than you or me”.
I marvel who the whipping advisor was. Is it right whips crack because they break the sound barrier? Sounds highly improbable to me. Flyrod/lines are basically whips, and they snap in the air, if you get your timing, in their case, incorrect. It is just the very tip colliding with the near tip part, going in opposite directions. To get to 1088 fps the whip would somehow have to juice up the speed of the tip by ten times the speed of the hand. Anyway you will have a lot of time to consider the phenomenon since he refers to it many times.
It’s a tale with a pulse. A bit embarrassing to read though, verges on the pornographic.

“Point of Impact” is one of my favorite books and I have read all of Stephen Hunters earlier and later works. They are not all gems for persons of you who haven’t read them but they are pretty excellent.
I have been waiting for this movie for years. In the late 1990’s the project was supposed to star Tommy Lee Jones but that movie never got made. This movie is pretty faithful to the book with updating for modern times. But, the ending is out of left meadow and a terrible conclusion. Perhaps this is because through all of the additional books about Bob Lee and his father, never once did I feel ashamed of their behavior as I did watching this ending. Bring shame on on Stephen Hunter for allowing this to take place to his tale.
