“I read Perfection breathlessly, grateful to its leader for these unvarnished truths about her late spouse’s infidelities. Julie Metz gives us a courageous and fascinating postmortem on a seemingly pleased marriage, making an emotional detective tale that is unforgettable.”
–Elinor Lipman, leader of My Latest Grievance
Julie Metz had seemingly the perfect life–an adoring spouse, a pleased, spirited daughter, a lovely ancient house in a quaint suburban town–but it was all a lie.
Julie Metz’s life changed forever on one ordinary January afternoon when her spouse, Henry, collapsed on the kitchen floor and died in her arms. Suddenly, this mother of a six-year-ancient became the young widow in her bucolic tiny town. But that was only the beginning. Seven months after Henry’s death, just when Julie thought she was emerging from the worst of it, came the rest of it: She learned that what had appeared to be the reality of her marriage was but a half-truth. Henry had hidden another life from her.
Perfection is the tale of Metz’s journey through chaos and transformation as she makes a different life for herself and for her young daughter. It is the tale of rebuilding both a life and an identity after treachery and widowhood, of rebirth and happiness–if not perfection.

Perfection: A Memoir of Treachery and Renewal , by Julie Metz is an extremely personal account of a not so “perfect” life. After the unexpected death of her spouse Henry, and 12 years of marriage, 44 year ancient Julie Metz finds herself alone with a six year ancient daughter to raise. She spent the greater part of the next seven months living in a fog and missing the like of her life terribly. When a friend tells her about a woman Henry had been seeing in New York, Julie is shocked. Before long Julie learns it is not just one woman that Henry had strayed with, but a succession of at least five women, including a excellent friend.
Obsessed to find out more she searches emails and journals tracking down the women and setting out to meet them, and to know “why” Henry had been unfaithful over and over again.
For Henry it seemed, was permanently looking for thrills in life, in like, and in lust, in additional words “perfection”, but as Julie Metz points out “right perfection comes when you delight in the whole of your life, and not just the excellent bits”.
Small by small Julie went from a “you are so lucky to be dead attitude Henry”, to one of forgiveness, moving on, and learning to like again.
A painfully honest memoir, lacking a “poor me” tone, Perfection: A Memoir of Treachery and Renewal, kept me engaged as a reader. Certainly not an simple tale to tell, it was very well done. I was also impressed to learn the Julie Metz is a graphic artist that designs book jackets, and that the picture perfect tulip on the take in really seemed to fit the title perfectly. My only negative comment about this book is that I thought there was a bit too much detail into all of Henry’s romantic involvements; additional than that I really loved this memoir.

I was initially leery of ordering this book, as it was listed as used and the fee was unbelievably inexpensive. I chose, agreed the low fee, I would give it a shot, and if it didn’t work out I’d chalk it up to experience. Well, was I ever surprised! The book arrived in four days and was in better condition than my acquaintances new one. Perfect, as far as I’m concerned. I will definately be ordering from this vendor again!

All bios are about the me, me, me thing but do we have to know EVERYTHING?? I reflect this tale of a marriage gone south in life and death is at once absorbing and tiresome. I reflect her editors did her a fantastic disfavor and should of cut, cut CUT! Many details of leader’s sexual delights, copious flaws of folks still alive and stupid non-transitioning sentences to the next paragraph should of been edited. Sometimes I wanted to say TMI Julie! For me the tale was thoughtful in the leader’s telling of her daughter, Liza. How Liza dealt with Mom’s obsession, outrage and pain. The cutting edge of the tale was the treachery and arrogance of Henry and how men and women deal with such a huge personality. Leader’s insights excellent but if one can’t forget are they really forgiving??
