I am the leader of Made in the UK –
I bought 2 Ottolenghi cookbooks – fantastic gifts – most unusual flavor combinations – like their receipes and their take out stores in London

Every dinner party I went to the last time I was in London there were dishes from this marvelous book, so I had to have it. I haven’t cooked anything yet but it all looks so yummy! Excellent photography and uncomplicated recipes.

i had never heard of ottolenghi before but i read the reviews and thought id give it a go. I was so excited to receive this book and i flicked through from back to front. I loved the look and ingredient lists for the baked goods (towards the back), but as i got to the front of the book, my interest ongoing to dwindle. The first part is LOADS of salad, and im not a salad fan. They also use lots of fruit and vegetable combinations and eccentric ingredients ive never heard about-and yes im usually permanently shopping in deli’s and healthfood/alternative food stores. I chose to then read the introduction section. I really loved the first part and i felt that the explainations of how the restaurant got together was sufficient. Then it carried on and on and on! I also felt that throughout the book there was a pretentious undertones.
I have tried a few recipes and persons that i did try i felt (like a previous reviewer place reasonably exact) that tehy seemed to be missing in something or not enough of something to make it taste right…but again, thats just my opinion on taste.
I’ve not tried any of the baked goods yet, and they do look incredible.
Please remember its only a fellow foodies opinion! I wouldnt recommend this book but i do like the pictures and the fact that they accompany a snippet of thought with each recipe….

This books starts with the Modern English cuisine (note: this is a UK term and might not be familiar to all) and adds a Middle Eastern touch. This works very well and the recipes produce very tasty food. The end result is far removed from any traditional English cooking, except for the cakes and puddings, which for some reason are reasonably traditional.
To some extent similar (but lacking the Middle Eastern touch) is Skye Gyngell’s books. UPDATE: Could I change the ratings, I would back the ratings of these two books

I have so many cookbooks some might see it as ridiculous I buy yet another…but this one is really reasonably special. This book is very inspiring. Nice pictures, they really bring the dishes to life. But, it’s the inventive, thoughtful combination of ingredients that just blow me away. Seriously, I just look at the picture of the green bean and pea dish and 20 additional variations pop in my head. I am not a recipe follower too regularly, mostly I just read and then start chopping whatever is in the kitchen. I heartily recommend it even though I have barely read through 15 pages. The authors are VERY point in their cooking directions in a really excellent way. They also like their veggies a bit on the crunchy side for our family tree’s taste, but that is simple to change. I wish it was in paperback so it was simpler to read in bed.
