Whether dueling with new forensics or the local ancient boys’ network, irreverent defence attorney Andy Carpenter permanently leaves them awed with his biting wit and winning fourth-quarter game plot. But the fun stops the day Andy’s dad, Paterson, New Jersey’s legendary ex-D.A., drops dead in front of him at a game in Yankee Stadium. The shocks pile on as he discovers his dad left him with two unexpected legacies: a chance of $22 million that Andy never knew existed…and a murder case with enough racial tinder to burn down City Hall. Struggling to serve justice and bring honour to his father, Andy must dig up some explosive political skeletons-and an astonishing family tree secret that can close his case (and his mouth) for excellent.

I bought this book because it was in my Amazon recommendations
as a “officially authorized thriller/mystery”.
Don’t judge it! This book is very juvenile and the main
character could be Frank & Joe Hardy’s sleuthing buddy.
Stick with John Grisham and David Baldacci. I also recommend
Greg Iles, but I won’t read any more books in this series.

Open and Shut is a decent read, even if a bit cliche and trite. It wasn’t a book “I couldn’t place down,” but I was curious to find out what would take place. It makes a nice beach read or gym read.
That said, I establish two things particularly bothersome:
- The depiction of a newspaper headline when the main character is set up for a humiliating moment. The headline from the Bergen (N.J.) Record is not one any self-respecting newspaper such as the Record would run.
- The depiction of New Jersey. For a novel so entrenched in Jerseyana and unabashed about talking about New Jersey, the leader had several inaccuracies that alienated me as a New Jerseyan. For one, judges and prosecutors in New Jersey aren’t elected, though the novel makes mention of such an instance at least twice.

Andy Carpenter is a nice young hotshot lawyer with some problems. His beloved Dad who was stuck with a fatal heart attack at a Yankee game has directed him to defend a man on death row who is going to get a new examination on a technicality. Dad was the District Attorney who prosecuted the case. Andy learns he has inherited 22 million mysterious dollars from his father, and has no thought where the money came from. Also, he is growing apart from his perfectly nice wife who also happens to be the daughter of an all-powerful U.S. Senator who was his father’s best friend.
The case against the alleged killer is appealing, but the evidence seems to be a slam-dunk for the prosecution. The more Andy investigates the less certain it seems to be. The courtroom scenes are stellar, reasonably a few notches above the average officially authorized thriller. But, Andy efforts to wrench the evidence around to show his father was untainted by the chicanery all around the case diffuses the tension. (But there is that 22 mill, isn’t there)
Andy is a bit naïve about prosecutors safeguarding the rights of the accused. It shows him as a nicer guy even if you marvel where he went to law school. He is a bit of Robert Parker’s “Spencer” lacking being as confident or nearly so witty, and a lot of Harlan Coben’s fellow-Jerseyite, sports loving Myron Bolitar but not nearly so lovable.
Edgar nominated (Best First Novel) “Open and Shut” has promise. A less intricate tale line would be a huge improvement. 3-1/2 stars.

I have just concluded reading OPEN and Shut, which I received from Amazon last week. The book was terrific and more importantly, it was cheaper than any book in the book store and I didn’t need my car to go and buy it. From now on, I am going to order all my books from Amazon.
