Product Description
From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a gorgeous, haunting autobiography.
Agassi’s incredibly rigorous training starts when he is just a child. By the age of thirteen, he is banished to a Florida tennis camp that feels like a prison camp. Lonely, frightened, a ninth-grade dropout, he rebels in ways that will soon make him a 1980s icon. He dyes his hair, pierces his ears, dresses like a punk rocker. By the time he turns pro at sixteen, his new look promises to change tennis forever, as does his lightning-quick return.
And yet, despite his raw talent, he struggles early on. We feel his confusion as he loses to the world’s best, his greater confusion as he starts to win. After stumbling in three Grand Slam finals, Agassi shocks the world, and himself, by capturing the 1992 Wimbledon. Overnight he becomes a fan favorite and a media target.
Agassi brings a near-photographic memory to every pivotal match and every relationship. Never before has the inner game of tennis and the outer game of fame been so precisely limned. Alongside plain portraits of rivals from several generations—Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer—Agassi gives unstinting accounts of his brief time with Barbra Streisand and his doomed marriage to Brooke Shields. He reveals a shattering loss of confidence. And he recounts his spectacular resurrection, a comeback climaxing with his epic run at the 1999 French Open and his march to become the oldest man ever ranked number one.
In clear, taut prose, Agassi evokes his loyal brother, his wise coach, his gentle teacher, all the people who help him regain his balance and find like at last with Stefanie Graf. Inspired by her silent might, he fights through crippling pain from a deteriorating spine to remain a treacherous opponent in the twenty-first and final year of his career. Entering his last tournament in 2006, he’s hailed for completing a stunning metamorphosis, from nonconformist to elder statesman, from dropout to education advocate. And still he’s not done. At a U.S. Open for the ages, he makes a courageous last stand, then delivers one of the most stirring farewells ever heard in a sporting arena.
With its breakneck tempo and raw candor, Open will be read and cherished for years. A treat for ardent fans, it will also captivate readers who know nothing about tennis. Like Agassi’s game, it sets a new standard for grace, style, speed, and power.

I bought this book as a gift – I am shocked at the horrible quality of the printing. For a guy who represented “image is everything” this book doesn’t do him any favors. Firstly, the print is upside down compared to the jacket and title on the edge of the book?!? The paper looks like the cheapest paper I’ve ever seen in a hardback. It looks like recycled grocery sacks. And the trim on the pages is ridiculous. Every page is a different width and looks like it was cut with a bread knife. I hope the writing is excellent. Is everyone else’s book like this? I can’t judge it hasn’t been mentioned in the additional reviews. Did they read it on Kindle?
OK – my terrible. I guess this is the new “cool” thing to make it look like you care about the environment by using recyled paper. I’m changing my 1 star rating to 4 stars because I loved the read and he’s lucky enough to be married to my favorite tennis player.

First, let me start by adage that I live in the same area as Mr. Agassi and his wife. And have personally met them at a local market. They are both lovely people – and are not your predictable celebrities.
Regarding this book – I realize this is a free country and he can state what he wants when he wants……
But, I PERSONALLY feel unless 100% of the proceeds go towards charity – this book is perfect nonsense. Mr. Agassi and his wife are worth over 300 million dollars combined. Why do this now? I can know putting your thoughts on paper for therapeutic reasons – but to sell a book??
His life wasn’t perfect, the book is very well written, yes like a novel – a fantastic tale – but imagine if everyone got paid millions to place their life tale on paper? I know dozens of people that did not have a fantastic child hood, had demanding parents, abusive parents, and did drugs. I also know people that are recovering alcoholics from being abused physically, mentally and emotionally – the list is endless. It’s called LIFE and people can choose to go forwards every day and turn a negative into a positive – Like Mr. Agassi has done in his life. The book? For the sake of building MORE money? I completely disagree with. Again, I realize he was obviously hurting – maybe not feeling 100% pleased bottling up these emotions – but it comes down to money. I also know he does have his own foundation – but IMO the books proceeds should also go to his foundation or additional various charities worldwide – anything less than that doesn’t make any sense to me – personally. This book is a fantastic read – but wholeheartedly feel – agreed Mr. Agassi’s enormous wealth – that all profits go to charity.

I ordered this book as a Chirstmas gift. I purposely ordered this book New, and when it came it was an dreadful condition! The pages were torn and not even. The book was in much worse condidition than two ther books that I ordered used. After paying the fee to buy the book new, I was then questioned to pay the shipping cost to ship the book back, thus not recieving my full refund! I have bought several books from Amazon, but was extremely disappointed at the condition of this book!

I thought that it might be a nice gift for my spouse who likes tennis. When the book arrived I was so disappointed with the quality of the product… unevenly cut pages, thick, dull paper. Hope that contents of the book makes up for its appearance.
