Product Description
New York Times best selling leader William R. Forstchen now brings us a tale which can be all too terrifyingly real…a tale in which one man struggles to save his family tree and his tiny North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages…A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP). A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies.
Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to ruin the entire United States, factually within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Tribute, this book, set in a predictable American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future…and our end.

So over the last four days, I chose to break in my new Kindle with a novel called One Second After by William Forschten. It is a newer relief about life in America after an electromagnetic pulse weapon (a nuke with no fallout danger) were detonated high above our nation. Normally, I am nervous about the “post-apocalyptic genre” because some of these authors are so sick in the head (i.e. The Road) that I don’t even want to read their book. This one had a foreword by Newt Gingrich and seemed to have excellent user ratings and a lot of research went into telling a realistic tale.
I have to say this one really got me thinking. First of all, we aren’t prepared for something like this, and it alone is a excellent reason to have some supplies at home even if you don’t live on Hurricane Way or Tornado Alley. Let me say that I am the last to be alarmist. This book showed me a scenario, but, and place me in a frame of mind to consider the what if’s.
The one thing about he book that was missing was portraying a right faith in Jesus Christ. The book is written from a Catholic perspective, a personal faith in Jesus has been relegated to the background in favor of repeating Hail Mary’s, and Jesus message is described as one of open mindedness and non-judgmentalism. (Never mind that Jesus Himself said “I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life, NO MAN comes to the father but through ME.” and then there’s that whole thing about Jesus judging every man….but I digress…) Thankfully there is only one sentence in the book that does that, and I had a vision at that moment of throwing my kindle across the room in disgust. If it had been a book, I might have! Aside from this, the book was fantastic about showing town life post EMP in a honestly realistic sense, and lacking being unnecessarily graphic to drop jaws. Some things are better left inferred.
This is a book everyone can read and delight in, but as permanently, use discernment. It does it’s job in getting one to reflect seriously about the what if’s and preparing personally for a potential scenario such as this if it were to occur. Falls fleeting but in the faith dept., and generally paints Christians outside of the RCC as weak, mindless, or even cultish. This is a minor aspect of the storyline, but.

this was an appealing book. i have read a similar type book by a christian writer and liked it much better. there is just too much terrible language in this book and i usually tend to not rread these type of books but was drawn into the tale so did end it. very, very violent tale lines in it but probably truthfully is someting that would take place if this scenario ever came to pass.you’d be better off reading Blackstocks “Last Light” sold at amazon also.

I suspected problems when I realized that Newt wrote the forwards… This book is nothing but an attempt to scare the wits out of people in order to get them to support increased military spending, the neocon’s dream. I suffered through it and was spared a lot of the editing problems because I listened to the audio version (while doing additional things, so it wasn’t a perfect waste of time). But, when it got to the scene in the college where the president starts his predictably right-wing, flag-waving, Christianized preachy diatribe, I just burst out laughing.
Naturally, the token black guy is the janitor. And reasonably predictably named Washington. All military veterans are wonderful in this book, heroic patriots. Anyone who is even slightly left wing is evil. The local Christian college is wonderful and everyone there is heroic. The rival, nearby, more progressive college is, of course, doomed, because the people there don’t have GUNS, and are evil left wingers. The daughter, who we are told is diabetic right from the start, is doomed, and that is so predictable as to be amusing, as well.
Furthermore, with just a brief search of the Net, I was able to find some reliable information about EMP which refutes many of the claims the leader makes in the book. I expected the afterword to be by somebody with some power who could take up the science. It’s not. It’s another military veteran, not a scientist, who plays the “be worried, be very worried” card.
Dreadful book.

Unlike some of the additional sub 5 star reviewers, I was unable to end this book. It is just that horrible. I’m a fan of post-apocalyptic type novels but this is more like reading Glenn Becks fantasy.
Obviously, the main character is a super version of the leader and goes through the book fulfilling all the fantasies that your average right wing nutbar would have. From packing heat from the civil war, to smoking anywhere you please.
The conservative political influence chokes the life out of this tale. The thought for the tale is very excellent and I wish an actual leader had thought of it first.
