It’s exciting to see more books on understanding animal language apt so well loved. This one reminds me of another favorite, “Adam’s Task: Calling Animals by Name,” by Vicki Hearne, which also focuses on really understanding your pet. It combines animal training with philosophy and literary criticism. The Atlantic Monthly called it “A fascinating and regularly surprising discussion of animal-human encounters.” If you are an animal teacher– or even just an animal lover– it’s certainly worth checking out.

I’ve read the book several times and establish it useful in understanding my dogs and showing me that dogs have a language but I can’t judge that everything a dog does is part of language. There are bodily functions like yawning that could mean that the dog needs oxygen rather
than it’s trying to communicate.
All in all I reflect it’s better than the DVD but they both are better than either one alone. I also don’t judge that positive only is the way to go. A dog is entitled to the consequences of his terrible behavior.

This book has some appealing insight but does not provide much practical advice on how to use the signals. Plus it does not seem to give many varied views.

Not worth the money – unless you fine it for about 2 bucks. If you have dogs it is things you will already know. There was maybe one thing I didn’t know. It is very basic. Go to the library and read it for free. If they don’t have it – don’t bother.
