Product Description
While it may seem that every possible topic about New York City’s attractions has been written about, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is the first book to focus on the hundreds of off-the-beaten-path destinations in the city. Some are tiny museums, others are historic places long forgotten, some are stores that sell only odd things, and some are distinguished for their aver to fame as the world’s largest/smallest whatever. All of them are notable for the passion with which their proprietors and curators care for them, and all can be visited via the subway system as the leader directs readers to which of the city’s 486 subway stations will get them closest.
These are the types of places and things that fit perfectly with New Yorkers’ psyches and egos and satisfy the desire of tourists to see the unusual. For example, New York is home to the world’s tallest Doric column, the world’s largest armory, the world’s largest cathedral, and the world’s largest Reform synagogue. It also has a troll museum, a numismatic museum, a skyscraper museum, doll and toy museums, and a museum of comic and cartoon art. In many cases, half the fun of visiting many of these sites is meeting the people behind them.
Organized geographically to help readers explore the culture and diversity of the city’s fantastic neighborhoods, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City’s Best Unusual Attractions offers venues in Lower, Middle, and Upper Manhattan; Brooklyn; the Bronx; Queens; and Staten Island. Each section features attractions and fascinating sidebars highlighting places that are particularly appealing to explore.

This book is much more suited to people who live in New York or know the city very well. If you are new to the city is not a excellent way to get accustomed to the city, as the book doesn’t really lay out all-purpose information and most of the attractions in the book are very odd.

I was really looking for places “off the beaten track” but this book had nothing you could not get off the net or regular tourist book. It’s basically a listing of museums and churches. Very Very disappointing

Mostly museums, nothing thrilling. If I had looked at it in a bookstore I would have left it on the shelf. That’s the test isn’t it?

People who know me are regularly surprised when I tell them that New York is NOT one of my favorite cities. Granted, the first time I was there, it was miserably cold, and that could make most anyone dislike a place. But the second time was in the spring; I got fantastic Broadway tickets and saw some incredible exhibitions, yet I still wouldn’t count it among my favorite places in this country, let alone on this planet. When I selected up Suzanne Reisman’s “Off the Beaten (Subway) Track,” I was reasonably skeptical. Promising us the New York City’s best unusual attractions, it made me curious enough to crack it open and read a few sentences here and there.
Well, I have to admit – if Ms. Reisman would be my guide, or if I simply follow some of her suggestions next time I find myself in NYC, I just might change my mind about it. Written in pleasantly chatty, yet extremely informative way, this book takes the reader to places I never thought to look for during either of my visits. I have to admit that the only place I was aware of before I read the book was really Louis Armstrong House. I don’t scare easily, yet most of my NYC explorations have been sadly limited to Manhattan, maybe due to the fact that people simply do not smile much in the city, and even less so while on the subway. But after reading about all the fascinating places described within “Off the Beaten (Subway) Track,” there were so many of them that piqued my interest that I’ll probably have to head up North sooner than I anticipated.
Organized in a sensible, geographical way, Ms. Reisman’s book would enable anyone to head to less well-known areas with enough confidence to conquer even the fascinating New York City’s public transportation. The pleasantly eclectic mix of attractions in the book, ranging from a Troll Museum to a Masonic Museum, with enough art and religious places thrown in, should make anyone’s visit to NYC far more pleasant and unusual. And the addition of some reasonably off-the-wall-sounding eating places only makes the whole mix more appealing.
I’ve loved Ms. Reisman’s “Off the Beaten (Subway) Track” momentously and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to travel, either for real or just in an armchair. The New York she describes is fresh, unusual and engaging. I establish the book to be well researched, thoughtfully written and filled with valuable practical advice.

I was preparation my third trip to NYC and bought this to see if it may contain some things that might not have been in all the additional travel books that I had bought. I reflect there was one, maybe two things here that I heard about previously. I did end up taking the vertical tour at St. John the Divine that was mentioned in the book. It was a wonderful tour and a highlight of my trip that I would have never have known about. I reflect it you are a frequet visitor looking for new things to do or even a local, you will find something different here.
