Were Mary and Joseph married at the time of The Nativity? Or were they merely engaged? A comparison of Luke 2:5 in various Bible versions yields appealing results. The older Bible translations mantain that Mary and Joseph were married, while the newer translations aver that they were engaged. The New King James Version is no exception, in that “betrothed wife” is substituted for “espoused wife”. Changing “espoused” to “betrothed” does small to bring up to date the language and much to change the meaning of the passage.
Does this matter? People who judge that the church has a duty to discourage last minute marriages may find the image of Joseph escorting his heavily pregnant fiancee to Bethlehem a small disconcerting. It also contradicts Matthew 1:24,25 in which the couple are safely married long before the blessed event. I was just coming to judge that the New King James Version was a safe and worthy successor to the ancient King James Version when I learned this. Now I reflect I will stay with the ancient version. The language may be a small archaic but it has been around for nearly 400 years, and there are no surprises. People who want a modern language King James Version should consider the 21st Century King James Version (KJV21) in which the updating was done much more conservatively.

This was a fantastic buy. I like the size and can read while laying in bed. Type size is also simple to read. Couldn’t be more pleased. My last Bible was a NIV and it fell apart at the spine in three years. Called them and they refused to help. Just as excellent, it was like holding a bus on my chest.

I LOVE this Bible. Having formerly operated a Bible Bookstore some years back, I am to some extent familiar with Bibles. For a Slimline size, this one has it all for an unbeatable fee. It is lightweight, simple to carry and read and feels fantastic in the hand. The Bonded Leather is supple enough that in just a few days of use the take in is “softening” nicely. I am very impressed with it overall. I also really like the NEW King James Version, which I find the most readable of any version and remains very right to the original texts with notations on the bottoms of the page when there may be differences. I also delight in the Chapter headings and find them very helpful when searching a certain thought or topic.
I find the print size comfortable and the Concordance, maps and past notes regarding some of the Books all rather impressive for a bible of it’s size. The Through the Bible in 1 Year reading guide is an added plus, as is the guilt edging and one ribbon marker and presentation and family tree records pages. The only thing it is missing could be thumb indexes, but for under $20 I am not complaining! I am very thankful for my Thomas Nelson Giant Print Slimline NKJV Bible!
