Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, October 2009: An investigation into a cold-blooded murder introduces Detective Harry Bosch to a Chinese underworld lurking in the dark recesses of the City of Angels. Its tentacles are far reaching, yet it remains shrouded in secrecy due to time-honored cultural traditions that keep the exploited from language out. To the victim’s family tree, Bosch promises revenge, but when his own daughter suddenly becomes a target, he promises blood. But, effective a case with leads on both sides of the Pacific provides small room (or time) for error. 9 Dragons is a stark, coffee-and-cigarettes crime thriller full of smart twists and generous helpings of suspense. Fans of Michael Connelly can expect another exceptional thrill ride, while newcomers will be immediately engaged by the tortured and inexorable Bosch. “He knew one day it would come to this, that the darkness would find [his daughter] and that she would be used to get him,” writes Connelly. “That day was now.” –Dave Callanan

You don’t need to read the first 2/3s of this mess of a book…jsut watch the movie TAKEN and you pretty much have the plot and action scenes. Dissapointed that the leader took the bone idle way out this time, as his novels are usually way better than this. Characters were 2 dementional at best….plot was completely unoriginal….and the ending was forseen 1/3 in. A perfect mess and total dissappointment. Avoid.

I have read all of the books in this series and, unlike additional reviewers, I did not much care for this one. Well, not exactly right: I did like it a lot while I was reading it – predictable Connelly action and surprises – but as soon as I finished I became momentously disappointed.
Who is Harry Bosch? He has no deep feelings for anyone. His thought of like is more his own personal view of duty, nothing borne out of real concern about the additional person. Certainly, he undergoes a tremendous effort for one of the characters close to him, but, when that is over with, he completely messes up the small things that constitute like. And don’t get in his way – or even near him! Friend, foe, cohort or lover, Harry Bosch trusts no one, cares for no one, and looks past the debris that he leaves in his wake. People just die or become permanently wounded when ol’ Harry passes through. And Harry Bosch? He can go through physical, mental, and emotional stress that would crush three of us – all in a day or two – and still have time for an In and Out burger.
Even Harry’s justice is flawed. He is all too ready to cut deals with the terrible guys, take advantage of relatives, ancient associates, coworkers he has nearly forgot, yet he doesn’t even know where his daughter was born. Everybody owes one to Harry Bosch.
And Harry is, well, Harry is not getting any younger. Serving in Vietnam puts him in his early ‘Sixties (at least). My age group, and I retired long ago. It is time for Harry Bosch to do likewise…

Either this book was written by a non english language computer or by a committee in a Junior High School. Hard to get to the crux of the matter through garbage. I have been a Connely fan for a long time, but this book has finished a long and satisfactory relationship.

I delight in Connelly’s Harry Bosch series. The only problem I have with this tale is that the plot moves so quick that it seems like you’re done right after starting the book! And with a significant character now removed from the tale line (I won’t include a plot spoiler), I’m left to marvel it there will be any more Harry Bosch novels.
It appears that Connelly has a lot of irons in the fire nowadays, such as additional novels, TV series collaboration, etc. I hope that perhaps he’ll concentrate on producing a bit more detailed and lengthier tales in the near future.
But as a quick read and a nice way to spend that afternoon, this book satisfies. And that’s all I question of this genre.
