Okay — I do not do reviews, but I read these reviews and they were so negative in all-purpose that I felt I had to. One reader complained that LKH “has taken a incorrect turn with Richard’s character.” Well, Richard is LKH’s creation so she can change him anyway she wants. And really Richard has been like this from day one — it’s just coming our more. A name else called Richard whiney(sp?). Richard wants to be a normal person and not a werewolf. He also (mentally) lives in a world where people are honorable and do the right thing — boyscout syndrome. But real life is not like this and it causes him a fantastic deal of conflict. This really adds to the tale. A name else wrote that Anita’s new boyfriend being tiny enough to wear the same clothes she wears “was just too disturbing.” Why? Anita is about 5′5″ and so is her new boyfriend. It disturbs you to read about fleeting people? Your’e a biggot! And for persons of you who haven’t been exposed to this series, Anita usually wears shirts and jeans and tennis shoes so her boyfriend is not going in drag! A name else complained about the kinky sex. Huh? Re-read this book. Are you referring to kinky sex as sex with more than one sex partner at a time? That’s pretty tame by today’s standards! A name else complained about Anita losing control of her life. Anita dealing with the “ardeur” which takes away her self-control, of which she is extremely proud, this just helps renovate the character even more. She is apt more and more a “motherly but strong heroine” which adds more depth to her character.
A name else complained that “the carnage is so over the top” they lost interest. You need a heavy dose of reality. Read some right crime tales or something — people are this violent on a daily basis — women slaughtering their children, husbands murdering or torturing their wives. No, this just adds to the realism, besides which it helps set the feel for the tale — about how horrible the violence is. Another reviewr complained about Anita saving Gregory, then Damian, then Michah, etc. Guess what — she is a strong character and saves people in every book. That’s the whole point — she saves people. A name said that original the “plot stormed along” in earlier books. Well if you want action read a western, or an action/adveture book, not a vampire tale! SOmeone had a problem with Anita apt something she originally despised — a monster, but if you notice she never becomes a monster, the real question she is really asking is — who are the monsters? The monsters or the people? One of the werewolves points out that more monsters are killed by people than people are killed by monsters. Remember Adolph Hitler? A perfect example of what she’s talking about! SOmeone else complained about Anita giving in to “mystical wanton lusts” — like you’re a 50-year ancient virgin? Come on, get real. And one final note — if you don’t like the way a writer tells a tale, just remember it’s her tale and not yours. Go write your own — but you can’t can you?

I just finished reading Narrcissus, the 10 th book in this series, and it had me from page one. I like these books. I am ready for the next one. When I learned Laurell K. Hamilton ( on a methadone list from another leader)there were already 7 books in the series. I read them one after the additional, and passed them on to friends and family tree…everyone loved them. This book takes Anita back to St. Louis, back to her men Jean Claude and Richard, and also introduces her to a new lover (a Nimir-raj were leopard) Micah. I must say that the tale line was wonderful as usual…but this was the first of Ms. Hamiltons books that really had me having….well…very…dreams after reading it! Anita is growing up, and long-suffering who and what she is in life. She raises the dead for a living (allthough shes on trip in this one) boyfriend a. a Master Vampire boyfreind b. an Alpha Werewolf And new boyfriend c. a Nimir-rag Were leopard . Theres so much to tell, I don’t want to give it away. I’ll just say this woman has a very busy life just trying to deal with the powers that her(triminutive) bind with a. and b. have brought her, let alone being Nimir-rag and taking care of her pard of were leopards, being master to a lone vampire, being lupa to the were wolves, and taking in and or helping any were animals that need her. If you want a fantastic…can’t place it down series, read this one, they just keep getting better… Hope to here from Anita and her gang again…VERY SOON

It has been six months since Anita Blake has seen her two lovers, Richard the shapeshifter and Jean-Claude the vampire. During that time she has been learning how to control her powers so something unpleasant doesn’t shock her. She is nearly ready to get in touch with her two men and see if they can come to an amicable arrangement since Richard, Jean-Claude and Anita are bound together in a triumvirate of power.
Before she can make the first go, two of her were-leopards are being tortured at the S & M club NARCISSUS IN CHAINS. She calls on Jean-Claude for help and he agrees only if she acquiesces to open herself up to the inscription of power so she has a fighting chance of coming out of this encounter alive. After Anita takes care of business, she fears changing into a were-jaguar since one who was trying to save her life cut her. Meanwhile a were-Jaguar wants to merge his group with hers. Before anything can be arranged, an enemy strikes out at the triumvirate, forcing them to place personal problems on hold and learn who is after them so they can stop him.
NARCISSUS IN CHAINS seems to be the definitive book in the series. The protagonist has come to terms with what she is and accepts that her vampire lover is a part of her life because he needs her. She also sees that Richard will never change and makes plans accordingly. Laurel K. Hamilton has written the best book of her career because she gives the audience the long waited answers they have been waiting for. This action-supernatural thriller is a keeper and with the passage of time will be considered a classic.

After the featureless (no like life), but adventurous (killing everything in sight), Obsidian Butterfly, Narcissus in Chains is a refreshing return of my favorite heroine. I like the quick pace that LKH puts in all her novels. There are a lot of terrible reviews for this novel, but the thing about a series is the progression of the character. Anita has been through alot and you can’t expect her to not change at all. Anyway, though, I loved this book, and every book that preceded it. If you read this one and still want to read the others, (Cerulean Sins, Incubus Dreams) then you are a die hard Anita fan. Despite all the sex and gore, it has fantastic dialogue and fantastic characters. Like Nathaniel and Jason!!!

Laurell K. Hamilton gets better with each book. This one had a twist that I wouldn’t have predicted as possible. A certain fantastic read.
