Product Description
When the unconventional Durrell family tree can no longer suffer the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family tree would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu. My Family tree and Additional Animals was proposed to embrace the natural history of the island but finished up as a delightful account of Durrell’s family tree’s experiences, from the many eccentric hangers-on to the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, scorpions, geckoes, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home.Amazon.com Review
As a self-described “champion of tiny uglies,” English writer Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) devoted his life to writing and the preservation of wildlife, from the Mauritius pink pigeon to the Rodriques fruit bat. My Family tree and Additional Animals was proposed to embrace the natural history of the Greek island of Corfu, but finished up as a delightful account of his family tree’s experiences that were, according to him, “rather like living in one of the more flamboyant and slapstick comic operas.”
As a 10-year-ancient boy, Gerry left England for Corfu with “all persons items that I thought necessary to relieve the tedium of a long journey: four books on natural history, a butterfly net, a dog, and a jam-jar full of caterpillars all in imminent danger of turning into chrysalids.” Durrell’s descriptions of his family tree and its many eccentric hangers-on (he stresses that “all the anecdotes about the island and the islanders are absolutely right”) are highly entertaining, as is the procession of toads, scorpions, geckos, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, the puppies Widdle and Puke, and the Magenpies. This is a lovely book.

Durrell has regularly been compared to some of his cntemporaries, and has fallen fleeting, especially paling in comparison with the likes of Henry Miller. Readers are fervently encouraged to try some of Miller’s fantastic works, such as “The Turn of The Screw”. Readers who loved Durrell’ book should examine the works of Miller, and some others as well; Proust, Flaubert, Joyce, Kafka, and some postmodernists, Rushdie, per se. I am of the persuasion that readers will find that Durrell’s work is not on par with persons of his contemporaries, or predecessors, at that.

I establish this book to be very confusing and I had to re-read the pages about 3 times until I understood it. My teacher MADE me read it so it took a while to end because I kept re-reading it over and over. Maybe when I get older I will delight in it more, but for now it is REALLY confusing.

maybe it’s just me. well, but I am the one who gives it 3 stars and not 4 or 5. why? I am not into this kind of novels and the only reason why I read it was for school. The plot is so-so. Animals don’t interest me. everything was so slow and dull. the plot is tooooo slow for me. I get bored. But what I realy really like is the leader’s descriptions. oh mi gosh, they have gotta be the best I’ve ever read. They are so lively. That I establish myself writing down all the nice phrases that I like on my pad. Wow, I never knew that One could like a book and despise is so much at the same time. well, here’s the book I’ve establish. Cheers.

The book was disappointing to me simply because I had loved the video as shown on PBS. The book is full of scientific names of animals, insects, etc., that if I hadn’t had a visual from the video in my mind of the characters, I would not have hung in there to the last page.
