Midnight Awakening reads like an average series romance. Perfunctory is the word I would use to clarify it. I cannot judge this novel comes from the same pen what wrote in the juicy tattoo-sucking scene in Kiss of Crimson.
`Widow’ romances are rarely much excellent and this is no exception. The heroine Elise subjects Tegan to one of the most outrageous teases I’ve ever read. First she comes on to him like she’s ready to do the deed. Then at the last moment she changes her mind, runs away, and then comes back to end the business! I thought her actions at the time nearly amounted to the sadistic torture of a guy who admits he hasn’t had biblical relations for 500 years. I don’t like that kind of thing.
And lookee. The Order has got it’s very own groupie, hanger-on. Chase. Just like Butch in the BDB. And he’s just as much of a brown-noser. I want him to die. Or be the first Rogue to infiltrate the compound. But I just know he’s going to get his own tale some time in the future.
As an veteran romance reader I establish Midnight Awakening to be such an eeeeasy read. But. Be aware that the tale still has the quota of soft-core and violence required by the genre. But not too much of either. Neither is the heroine brutalized by the baddies. I reflect that’s what I establish a bit much in Crimson. When Tess got munched by the Rogues. Not to mention the imagery of blood that was thrust into the tattoo-sucking scene. All a bit too much for me. But. Wow! What an imagination on a name’s part. Nothing like that in Midnight Awakening. Thank goodness. Sort of.
What is excellent is the non-romance plot. Something about a book and an very ancient alien vampire. Marek gets his just deserts but a name worse is due to take his place. But like so regularly, the thrills and tension do not make any appearance until well over half way into the book. It was wonderful how all the riddles were solved by the females.
I absolutely did not get the character of Andreas. I kept expecting that continental creep and his floosie to turn terrible. He takes up far too much of the novel for what is essentially a cipher role.
Absolutely not a patch on Kiss of Crimson. But perfectly acceptable nonetheless. And it was Tegan who turned out to be a cardboard cutout not Elise. I establish it all a bit one-dimensional and…simple.

It just keeps getting better and better! I really liked how this book didn’t reasonably follow siut with the first two romances. Tegan and Elise have both had Breedmate’s before, but through their pain of loss started to like again. I just tought it was all the more real because this romance took awhile to perfect since both were hestitant to like again (Tegan especially). I tend to be a sucker for vampire romances, this did not dissapoint. Just another terrific addition to this series.

I wanted more for the Gen One Vampire Tegan. Book 3 in the series the Midnight Breed starts a bit slow but does get better if you stay with. The like match between Tegan and Elise Chase just wasn’t their. They didn’t fit. The tale is missing in erotic sensual romance that is noted in Lara Adrains additional books and when they do get around to apt Blood Bond Mates it is weak their is not enough passion between the two characters. Elise reminds me of a hand me down pair of shoes. Tegan deserved a virtuous strong young gorgeous women and Elise didn’t deliver for me. Sorry!!!

Yeah, Lara Adrian is in the game. Her first two books were excellent reads, exciting, sexy, treacherous, fantastic chemistry between the characters. But, in this book she has arrived. I really, really liked Tegan’s character. And Elise has become one of my favorite heroinnes. She was smart, strong, but not arrogant, straight forwards and vulnerable. Tegan was all that is Alpha and deep. The plot was fantastic, especially the scene where she waits for him in his bedroom. I loved the new plot the series has taken and I can’t wait for Rio’s book.

For what they are, these are fantastic reads. Adrian has really made a pretty appealing mythology to serve as the back drop for her unabashed fantasy romance novels. This was my favorite so far mainly because this heroine had the most appealing backstory yet. There was a darkness and drive to her that was absent in the others. The largest stumbling block is the cornball B-grade macho movie dialogue that spews into the world during the action sequences. In and of themselves, they’re pretty exciting. But, when a main character in the previous installment stopped in mid-fight to really quote “Die Hard,” my eye-rolling took me completely out of the moment. And that happens a lot in the series. Too terrible.
