The description of this book fooled me into thinking that it was about speech chips that “make things talk”. You know, like talking toys you buy for your kids. Doesn’t that monkey on the take in look like one of persons? But the book is really about simple ways to get wired and wireless communication onto leisure activity projects. Appealing, but not what I needed.

Bleh, is all I can say sadly… This book had a fantastic premise, connecting everyday objects via radio/the web/IR… But due to unbelievably lengthy technical instructions, (It’s all the book is honestly) VERY hard to stay interested.
Readability: Terrible
Expertise Required: Better be an electronics degree or a network admin
Total Expense of Projects: High (I’ve no thought what the 20ish different modules/ICs would cost)
***I use the Arduino, know Processing, Basic and Python, and I’m taking manufacturing robotics classes on the side

Assumes a small more knowledge than I had thought (or maybe I just wasn’t that careful). Be sure to check out what they assume you know; for me it was the circuit schematics stuff.

‘Building Things Talk: Practical Methods for Connecting Physical Objects’ is a book for the tinkerer that wants to get into the guts of nearly any object and let it communicate back. From ripping up stuffed animals to learning how to network all sorts of devices together, the leader doesn’t just abstractedly chat about the thoughts of doing these things, he shows the steps for proceeding and building things come to life! Open in full color (albeit on cheap paper which DOESN’T ruin the experience at all), this book is perfect for people who are interested in networking and tinkering far more than most regular people might want to!
If you like ripping things apart and modding away to see what you can bring to life, this book might be for you!!
