More than 20 years have passed since Ellen DeGeneres came out to her mother on a beach in Mississippi. Stunned, Betty DeGeneres could only reflect of her own disappointed expectations. As she place her arms around her daughter, she was struck by the realization that she would never see Ellen’s picture on the engagements page of the Times-Picayune, her local paper. As much as I applaud Betty DeGeneres for her courage and support of gays, her book was a huge let down. It’s billed as a mother-daugther journey, but it’s really nothing more than an autobiography, and a rather poorly written one at that. Betty’s life isn’t all that appealing, and it seems like maybe she’s riding her legendary daughter’s coat tails to sell a book. There are a couple of chapters that deal with her relationship and acceptance of Ellen’s sexuality, but for 90% of the book I establish myself asking, “jeese, who cares! ”

Betty’s book is wonderful. I recommend it for people who are coming out, parents of gay children, friends of gay people, people who have been out, people who aren’t gay or don’t have gay friends of kids, everyone!
I first read Like, Ellen years ago in seventh grade. I was doing a biography on Ellen DeGeneres for my English class and needed a book for the assignment. I chose Like, Ellen because I didn’t want Ellen’s tale from a name who would give untruthful information. Who better to tell your tale than your mother? As I read this book I establish myself laughing at Ellen’s humor throughout her childhood and crying at the tales of young gay people whom Betty met while campaigning for equal rights. This is an incredible tale that gives a lasting emotional touch. Buy this book, read it over and over agin!

It was appealing, nice to know the journey that Ellen and her Mum went through. Tale was a bit slow in some parts but over all I’d recommend it as something to read, certainly not a waste of time or money!
