No matter when and why this comes to your hands, I want to place down on paper how things ongoing with us.
Written as a letter to her children, Kelly Corrigan’s Lift is a tender, intimate, and robust portrait of risk and like; a touchstone for anyone who wants to live more fully. In Lift, Corrigan weaves together three right and unforgettable tales of adults willing to experience emotional hazards in exchange for the gratifications of raising children.
Lift takes its name from hang gliding, a pursuit that requires flying directly into rough air, because turbulence saves a glider from “sinking out.” For Corrigan, this wisdom–that to glide requires chaotic, sometimes even violent passages–becomes a metaphor for all of life’s most meaningful endeavors, particularly the fantastic flight that is parenting.
Corrigan serves it up straight–how mundanely and fiercely her children have been loved, how close most lives occasionally come to disaster, and how regularly we fall fleeting as mothers and fathers. Lift is for everyone who has been caught off guard by the pace and vulnerability of raising children, to remind us that our work is vital and our time limited.
Like Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s Gift from the Sea, Lift is a meditation on the complexities of a woman’s life, and like Corrigan’s memoir, The Middle Place, Lift is boisterous and generous, a book readers can’t wait to share.
Praise for Lift
“Although we’ve never met, I like Kelly Corrigan like a friend. Her work gives me a rich sense of intimacy with a name who is full of life and hard-fought wisdom. She’s hilarious, tender-hearted, tough, loyal, wild, and screwed-up–like all the coolest women I know.”
–Anne Lamott, leader of Bird by Bird and Traveling Mercies
Praise for The Middle Place
“Amusing and irresistibly exuberant.”
–O, The Oprah Magazine
“Come for the writing, stay for the drama. Or vice versa. Either way, you won’t regret it.”
–San Francisco Chronicle
“Plot to laugh, weep, and be consumed by Kelly Corrigan.”
–Winston-Salem Journal
“For two days I ignored my family tree while I devoured Kelly Corrigan’s memoir. I spent a excellent part of that time crying, but mostly I was laughing . . . She captures our hearts and teaches us something new about family tree, like, and yes, even death.”
–Ayelet Waldman, leader of Terrible Mother and Like and Additional Impossible Pursuits

There’s a lot to like about Lift. For starters, it’s fleeting enough for even the busiest mom to make time for. Then there’s Kelly’s engaging style, which makes you wish she had five or six daughters to write about, as a replacement for of two, just so you could keep reading. Her insights, wit, and honesty about raising her girls is at once entertaining and thought-provoking. Heck, even the take in and title make you feel excellent. What a treasure for her daughters — and all of us, too.

Kelly is the master of capturing the special details of life in her writing! I’ve had March 1st on my calendar since the fall – when I heard that Lift would be unrestricted! It only took an hour to read – but what an emotionally-charged and magical hour it was! I read it take in to take in, laughing, crying (ok, sobbing), and nodding along the way! What a gift for Kelly’s girls – and all of us moms, dads, daughters, and sons!! The dread and joy, and the range of emotion and experience that motivates us to be the parents that we are is so hard to place into words, and yet, in Lift, Kelly easily accomplishes this on such a down-to-planet and relatable level. While I want to write my own letter to my kids, and Kelly’s book inspires me to do so, I am equally convinced that someday, when my kids are ancient enough, reading Lift will give them greater insight into this journey we call parenthood. In the meantime, I recommend Lift for any and every parent, and any & everyone who has a parent!! Way to go, Kelly!!

Kelly Corrigan did it again! Lift is so real … so gorgeous … so upLIFTing.
For years, I have wanted to tell my children what it is like to be a mom … ESPECIALLY my son … and Kelly place it into the words I was thinking but unable to say.
SO … they each got a copy of Lift!
Kelly is nearly 20 years younger than I am … yet I feel as if she is the wisest woman I know.
Don’t miss this lovely small book about the most vital job we will ever have … being a mother.
Thanks Kelly!
P.S. Went to Kelly’s reading at Harriton High Schook, Kelly’s alma mater. I bought the audiobook. I listen to it in the car … for inspiration … and to hear the cool, sensible and loving voice of Kelly Corrigan. TERRIFIC!

I loved Middle Place and was a bit apprehensive that Lift wouldn’t live up to Kelly’s first book. Like another reviewer, I sat and read it in the parking lot after I selected it up and couldn’t place it down. It captures so much of what it’s like to be a parent. Kelly says it like it is, but better and more articulately than most of us can. I can’t wait to read it again. Get it for yourself and buy a few extra copies for your friends.
