Hard to resist a chance to review the reviewer.
With the help of earlier incarnations of this guide, I have watched and loved thousands of movies, and suffered through just a few. My predilection for ancient movies probably has something to do with that. — I’ve even had a excellent time watching scores of foreign films, though my ability to savor the nuanced acting skill of a sword-waving samurai shouting Japanese while I read subtitles is to some extent limited. — I can usually read his review and choose whether or not a movie is for me, regardless of how many stars he gives it — his taste is not precisely my taste, but I don’t expect it to be.
I also appreciate that Mr. Maltin manages to keep his political views out of his reviews, something that some of the additional “name” reviewers seem unable to do these days. And he hasn’t become so jaded as to automatically praise the unusual and bizarre (although, let’s face it, all reviewers feel compelled to praise some Latvian/Bulgarian neo-realistic semi-impressionist study of the depravity of human relationships. But you can watch for the artsy words and, unless you are suffering through a film-history course, weed most of these out.)
I bought this updated edition to help sort through newer dvd releases — I’ve recently wasted three times the fee of this book on unwatchably terrible dvds based on the recommendations of friends ( cg effects routinely being used to disguise the absence of a decent speech ).
Help me Leonard Maltin, you’re my only hope…

Fantastic update from the one used from 2006. Keep it close by to look up movies showing.

I got this one, because it had larger print, and I’m an ancient guy. Buy one every couple of years, as this is the best one available.

Don’t go to movies regularly but this is invaluable for seeing what a movie is about before attending or renting it.

Maltin’s movie guide is as perfect and helpful as any guide on the market. That said, I really miss the annual guide from Mick Martin and Marsha Porter. The guides are reasonably similar except for two things. The M and P guide was the ONLY guide I establish that would give you the reason for the MPAA ratings. The additional thing is Maltin tends to get a small uppity at times which really seems stupid for a name who’s lot in life is he sits on his butt and watches movies!
I’ve contacted Ballantine Books and Mick Martin, but it seems Ballantine does agree with me and thousands of others that Martin and Porter’s guide was the best.
