I should have trusted the mediocre reviews of this book. L.M. Montgomery’s books are usually full of vibrant characters, action, and life. Kilmeny of the Orchard was flat, dull, and unbelievable. The only character who HAD a character was the villain.
Bottom line – don’t waste your time and money.

I’ve read the majority of LMM’s books, and have liked to loved most of them. This is the only one that I’ve really establish to be a disappointment. I agree with many of the additional reviewers; the characters were flat, the ending was too predictable, and the book itself was overly sugary. It wasn’t a horrid book, because LMM is too excellent of an leader to write a horrid book, but it certainly wasn’t excellent. I would steer away from this one if I were you (and I agree with one of the additional reviewers; if you’re looking for some excellent LMM, try “The Blue Castle”).

This book is very slow and the characters are to some extent drab and predictable. Every leader is allowed to have one average book and this is Montgomery’s. I had a terrible time trying to end it. It is well written, as is accustomed with LM Montgomery, but it lacks her usual spark. If you are looking for a novel practically perfect in every way try The Blue Castle–it is a far better romance. You can skip this aspect of Montgomery’s collection easily and not miss much.

Lucy Maud Montgomery’s 1910 novel, “Kilmeny of the Orchard”, is an unusual romance, set on the leader’s very own magic island of imagination, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
As the tale opens, young college graduate Eric Marshall agrees to substitute teach in the village of Lindsey for a friend who has taken ill. On an evening ramble, he discovers a neglected orchard, and a gorgeous woman who plays the violin in a bewitching manner.
The innocent young woman, whose name is Kilmeny, has a tragic history and a stunning diability; she is unable to speak. She communicates with Eric by writing on a slate. The two become close friends. Eric is reminded of his obligations as a man by his friendly landlady Mrs. Williamson, and he elects to declare his intentions to Kilmeny’s guardians, the Gordons.
Eric will face several obstacles to his like for Kilmeny: Kilmeny’s protective relatives; Kilmeny herself, who believes she is unworthy of marriage; Neil Gordon, a deadly rival for Kilmeny’s affections; and Eric’s own skeptical father. Eric will have to prove himself worthy of Kilmeny in an exciting conclusion.
According to Montgomery biographer Elizabeth Waterston, “Kilmeny of the Orchard” is a longer version of a fleeting tale written in 1908. The novel was the third written by Montgomery following “Anne of Green Gables” and “Anne of Avonlea.” It is highly recommended to fans of L.M. Montgomery as a fleeting but entertaining example of her imaginative writing.
