All is not well in Margrave, Georgia.
The sleepy, forgotten town hasn’t seen a crime in decades, but within the span of three days it witnesses events that place everyone stunned. An unidentified man is establish beaten and shot to death on a lonely country road. The police chief and his wife are butchered on a silent Sunday morning. Then a bank executive disappears from his home, leaving his keys on the table and his wife frozen with dread.
The simplest suspect is Jack Reacher – an outsider, a man just passing through. But Reacher is not just any drifter. He is a tough ex-military policeman, trained to reflect quick and act quicker. He has lived with and hunted the worst: the hard men of the American military gone terrible.
Amazon.com Review
When Jack Reacher suddenly decides to question a Greyhound bus driver to let him off near the town of Margrave, Georgia, he thinks it’s because his brother once mentioned that the famed blues guitarist Blind Blake died there. But it doesn’t take long for the footloose ex-military policeman to learn that there are plenty of weird–and very treacherous–things going on behind Margrave’s manicured lawns and clean streets that demand his attention. This first thriller by a ex- television writer features some of the best-written scenes of action in recent memory, a crash course in currency and counterfeiting, and a hero who is just begging to be called on for an encore.

Holy ’shrugged’ batman. He must have said ’shrugged’ 300 times in this one. He shrugged, she shrugged, it shugged….the gas station shrugged…the freaking birds in the trees shrugged. He should have named this one ’shrugging on the killing floor’. By the end of the book I could not get past it. It really was edited very poorly…too terrible too, the book was very excellent, especially for a first time leader.
cool use of violence though. 3 stars.

I’ll admit that I read this book coming off of reading David Copperfield; but, reading this book was PURE AGONY! The characters are cardboard, the plot is hackneyed and the violence is gratuitous. At only one place did the book bacome even moderately human, and even that part was spoiled by the leader’s twisting it back into the main (thin) plot. If you judge that this Jack Reacher guy is anything like the stereotype of a John Wayne character, forget it. Again, the plot is poorly contrived, the characters are cardboard and the writing is terrible. I would be hard pushed to buy another Lee Child book!

This stream of consciousness procdural is beyond tedious. It is painful. I read it because 1) I was stuck 2)I paid for it – but I want my money back (really rather have my time back!)

I liked the book well enough but I was not comfortable with the sentence structure. The tale was excellent and the characters were appealing. But I can’t say if I would buy another book because of the too fleeting sentences just don’t sound right
