I’m a hiker with about 500 accumulated miles on the AT. So you would reflect that I would find the book appealing. I’ve also spent more than a few hours at Mountain Crossing so I’m familiar with the routine, so you would reflect I would really tell to the whole tale. But, I establish the book rather dull. The tales told in each chapter are not that appealing. There is a reason the book is number 17000 and something on Amazon’s best seller list. I reflect the problem is, if you are a hiker you’ve probably met just as many characters as are featured in the book, so there is nothing unique about them. If you are not a hiker, I doubt you will read more than a few chapters before going on to something else. This is no knock on Winton, his people, or the job they do as retailers and advisors to the novice hikers who come through. I just don’t reflect his book is more than just an average read.

Just finished this book on trip and couldn’t place it down. I myself passed thru the breezeway back in 2001 when I hiked the Appalachian Trail (finished in 2002). I establish the book amusing, witty and could directly tell to the humor. Some of the tales seem too excellent to be right but, I can tell you from being out there for 5 months, they are indeed right. The aspiring thru-hiker and anyone who wants a small glimpse of the kind of people you run into on the Appalachian Trail will find this book worthwhile. I highly recommend giving it a shot. ~ D-Con

Winton and his crew are excellent people and I’m pleased that he’s published a book about his place and the trail. It is genuine, touching and entertaining.
Give it a read.

This book was a fun read about an appealing cast of characters that have passed through Winton Porter’s store and hostel on the Appalachian Trail over the years. It was also appealing reading about his early struggles as he built his business.
