I have read worse novels than this one, but it was baaaad just the same. I guess going by the reviews I am ne of the few people who didnt like this one and I really don’t know what’s there to like in this one.
I didn’t even know that J.D Robb was Nora Roberts! Thank God I got this book from the library and didn’t buy it!
The main characters were irritating to their core, or maybe I establish them irritating because I haven’t red the previous 10 or so books written before this one(and now I will not read them)
I just finished this absurd piece of tale because I despise to give back any bok unread.

The only reason I ongoing reading these books is because my friend said they were simple reading and a break from all the heavy stuff. And indeed they were. The problem is that the leader has made one major mistake which seems to have infatuated the whole of the population. That mistake (in my eyes) is called Roarke. For starters what a terribly unromantic name. Roarke. Secondly, don’t you find it a small convenient that the first time Eve comes across Roarke leads to lots of sex and eventually marriage and after that he is somehow involved in every single one of her cases? Thirdly, Roarke is the most unrealistic character I have ever met. He is ‘perfect’ in appearance, owns half the world (and some others) and is the most arrogant, possessive chauvinistic pig ever made. It is so unlikely that one: anyone is like that and two: that any independent woman would place up with a spouse who beats up an ex-boyfriend for holding her by her arms. Personally, I would prefer my spouse to place me to deal with stuff like that. The storylines are never that terrible, though they all end pretty much the same and Judgement In Death holds some nice twists. It’s just a bring shame on J.D. Robb left out the best character: Charles Monroe. He has such an appealing storyline and such an undeveloped character even though there are so many possibilties. Personally, I would like Eve to realise Roarke is a cardboard cut out of perfection which no-one wants and to run off with Charles. And another thing: why does everyone conveniently forget that Roarke has killed several people and can in fact be deemed, therefore, a serial killer? So they probably deserved it, but that is not the point. I would never be involved with a name who had managed to take 6 (?) people’s lives in such horrific ways to cause such intentional pain. And, again, convenient that the characters all have mucked up childhoods. Just makes them more intersting now, but what is the likelihood of such a group of people meeting up and finding all were abused/raped/adopted/abandoned whatever? very unlikely.
In conclusion, this book is enjoyable to read in the parts that actaully focus on the case. Whenever Roarke comes in I suddenly feel like taking a break. In my opinion there should be less emphasis on Eve and Roarke’s relationship (and sex – dull after several chapters of it) and more on the additional characters (including everyone’s favourite licensed companion) and the crime storyline.

When I selected up the book, I was reasonably intrigued by the title and take in text but this interest soon turned into pain. The storyline is mediocre and it is nearly impossible to guess the killer. This can not be construed as a feature, though. The people and “twists” are just so convoluted or unadorned “flat” that nobody could be expected to know their motives — if there should be any.
I surely won’t read anything by this “leader” again. If you want SciFi crime novels, keep to Niven.

i am very mad at j.d. robb for this book. not only did she place out one of the only decent characters – the sleek, polished, sexy charles monroe – but she also developed roarke’s already over the top arrogant character into a thug. how can he beat up his wife’s ex-lover and friend for…dun dun dah! touching her arms! and then to have webster to apologise. his posessiveness is disgusting and he comes across as a chauvinstic pig. i wouldn’t want him for a spouse no matter how intolerably attractive he is – also stupid. nobody can be as perfect as j.d. robb makes him out to be and that is why i feel these books are apt more and more shallow and 2-d.

There is not much chemistry btwn them any characters in the book. The mystery was reasonably predictable. Of course, Roarke would be connected to the case again. Hello! He DOES own 28% of the planet! Well, I find the book is saved by the new depth to Roarke’s character and the new layer of Roarke’s and Eve’s relationship. That things are not unrealistically happily ever after, this gives the series a high degree of vasimilitude. And it is nice to see R show a bit of jealousy… I find that this book does approach Roarke’s and Eve’s relationship in another light which is appealing and intriguing to me. I have permanently liked R and E, so if you are like me, read it. But, if you are for a excellent mystery, brain straining type, don’t.
