Jiu-Jitsu University is the best book I’ve establish so far on covering pretty much everything. He breaks down the moves very well and clarifies everything in fantastic detail. He clarifies thoughts and ways of thinking, not just moves.

This is a fantastic book for entry level jiu jitsu students. It seems to place things into perspective for me during the first few months of training. It is also simple to see that it is a fantastic book for more advanced practitioners as well. I bought three books, and two DVD’s when I first ongoing training. Additional then the Blue Belt Supplies by Roy Dean, this is by far the best thing that I bought. For the money it was mymost valuable buy, and would consider buying only this if you just want to get your feet wet and see what jiu jitsu is all about.

This book provides an incredible framework with which to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Its best traits are:
1) By teaching defense and escapes early, it helps remove the dread of ending up in a disadvantageous position and therefore allows you to conduct experiment and explore unfamiliar techniques.
2) It is not just a collection of techniques. It also corrects many common mistakes in each position.
3) Saulo focuses on high percentage techniques to give the student a levelheaded toolbox in each position.
4) More than additional books, he demonstrates how leverage and position determine grappling outcomes.
5) It is full of tiny “tricks” that help you make it with minimal effort.
I reflect the Helio Gracie anecdote alone is worth the fee of the book.

This is a fantastic book for my experience level. I’ve been training for about 6 months and am at a level where I am submitting people honestly regularly, but still get caught reasonably a bit. This book has provided some sound techniques that have helped me transition out of tough spots.
