It’s permanently unfair to compare any comic book to the Watchmen, where except for Alan Moore’s ignorant grasp of Cold War Politics, the book is truly genius. But The comparison I’d like to draw is thus: alan Moore’s Watchmen notably describes right human fundamentals in his heroes. They’re affected by the praise, criticism, and every punch from a thug really leaves a mark…something that didn’t take place to Spiderman, Superman, etc. Mark Waid’s Irredeemable takes this theme as he describes the most powerful hero in the known universe, possibly alien, trying so hard to reconcile with his TMZ detractors and the pressure of permanently having to be there to save the girl and the world.
There are patent comparison’s that Mark Waid’s Plutonian is really the Superman tale he could never be allowed to tell, and of the remaining excellent guys, there is certainly a poor man’s Hawkman. But that doesn’t detract from the stunning tale.
The most powerful man in the world suddenly is broken, destroying cities and wantonly murdering the heroes he used to help in their quest to make a better world. The considerably weaker heroes take it upon themselves to save as many as they can, while trying to learn what can bring the Plutonian down, even to the point of seeking out his greatest enemy who several times came close to killing him. Mark Waid wonderfully describes the hopelessness of these heroes who cannot even come close to competing with the power of the Plutonian, and he expertly holds back spilling every hint as to why the Plutonian snapped. Even casual fans I’ve had read the book like Mark Waid’s sense of hopelessness in the excellent guys while not over using the incredible power of the Plutonian’s madness.

Waid has yet again proven himself one of the best writers of spandex comics ever. I won’t give any plot points away, but just know I can’t recommend this high enough, for mature readers only though. There is graphic violence and disturbing imagery. What a fantastic book though. I would give it 6 stars if i could. Cheers!

Reason for Reading: The publisher’s plot synopsis grabbed me straight away.
Comments: One day The Plutonium, a very powerful superhero turns evil and becomes the world’s greatest super villain. He belonged to a group of superheroes, yet none of them came close to Plutonium’s powers. Now The Plutonium is hunting them all down and killing them and their alter ego families. He has ruined cities and is a heartless, ruthless killer. The tale focuses on his remaining teammates as they try to piece together information about the man inside the costume, what made him turn, and how can they stop him, all while staying on the run as he tries to hunt them down.
This is a stunning tale! It opens with a shocking sequence and the action never lets up. There are many layers to the tale and this is truly a study in character. The Plutonium is open as essential evil but as the reminiscences of the past Plutonium are brought forwards we see the powerful superhero proud and excellent. We also see the small things and some larger things that take place in his life that aren’t so nice, things that can erect up and lay heavy on a guy. The ancient superhero Plutonium becomes a character the reader can tell to and feel for and yet it is gut-wrenchingly unsettling to see the atrocities he is now capable of.
The book does contain a lot of violence, not the blood and gore type but more along the disturbing death kind. The book is certainly not for the young or the sick. Since I’m neither I’m keenly awaiting Vol. 2 which will be out this Spring.

This is a high quality book. The writing and art is brilliant on every page. You will not be sorry buying this book.
It’s about Plutonian, the world’s greatest superhero now gone terrible. What happens when the strongest superhero in the world goes terrible? How do you stop him? Answer = YOU CAN’T!!!
This book is brilliant. It’s a perfect book 1. It really feels like just the beginning though. I feel like some major action is going to take place in book 2 and beyond. And in the book “Indestructible” where this tale will continue with another supervillain/superhero.
Bottom line, this book is certainly one you need to read. I’m confident this will end up being one of the best superhero/supervillain tales out there.
You don’t have to read any additional book before this one. This is the starting point.
