I have really loved the Mercy Thompson series in the past and rushed out to buy my copy of the latest only to be honestly disappointed. The romantic conflict has been built up for two books and is resolved in a very anticlimatic way.

this installment into Mercy Thompson was excellent but not the best one yet.
The whole romance thing got kinda confusing and the tale line got erratic at times.
Hope the next one is better.

If you’ve read the first two books in this series and really loved them as a diversion from a world where everything is too violent and too real (after all you’re reading FANTASY for a reason, right?) I’ve got news for you, with this book Patricia Briggs has completely and irrevocably changed her main character and the scenery of these books. Unless you delight in reading the kind of violence to women with which our society is already overly saturated DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. You’ll have to find some additional extremely talented leader to read; one who doesn’t get tired of her character and takes the simple way out for the last 50 or so pages of her book. By the way, excellent luck with that search, let me know how that goes. Oh and by the way, don’t you reflect publishers should give you your money back when you buy one thing and get another? Kind of truth in packaging?

Wow…not what I had expected. Let me start by adage that I delight in the Mercy books and couldn’t wait to read the next installment. Now I wished I had place off buying it one more day so I could have at least used my 30% voucher from Limits.
First off, it took a excellent hundred pages to get the tale moving, something I’m not accustomed to when reading Ms. Briggs’ books. I really establish myself skimming through parts of the next 50 or so pages but if you hold forceful, the last third of the book Mercy FINALLY comes to life.
My largest complaint…the book description tauts how Mercy MUST chose between the two men in her life. Adam or Sam…den, den , den den! Two books in the building and this life altering event takes place within one page of print. Anticlimatic doesn’t clarify it. I personlly reflect Ms. Briggs couldn’t figure out what to do with the spare guy and recycled him into the pit of mundane, ineffectual secondary characters. In truth, Warren holds the spotlight more than ‘the jilted lover’.
I’m disappointed although I’m glad I read it. I can only hope the next one will be better. If not, it may be time for Mercy to lay down the wrench before the series is ruined.

This third installment of the Mercy Thompson series felt both drawn out and rushed at different points. The tale had an uneven feel that I don’t normally associate with the talented Briggs’ writing. For example, Mercy’s previous encounter with the vampires in book two was randomly mentioned throughout this tale, but with no appearance made by vampire Stefan. These side thoughts seem to make a lead in for a potential fourth book, but felt out of context.
The main tale/mystery was entertaining itself, but left me wanting more information about the Fae. While you learn more about the Fae, the tiny pieces were somehow less satisfying because you know there’s more. You also receive confirmation of Mercy’s loyalty to the people she cares about with her persistent investigation of a murder that involves her ancient boss, Zee, the self-described bug.
Beyond the mystery tale itself, like with the vampire mentions, I was surprised that Briggs introduced the issue of growing violence and xenophobia against the werewolves, but again, small exploration of the topic itself. As additional reviews have mentioned, the resolution of Mercy’s relationship situation felt to some extent flat, particularly agreed the erect up in the previous novels and the emotional events Mercy survives at the tale’s conclusion.
All in all, this third addition stirred Mercy’s tale forwards. But, I’m hoping for a return of Briggs’ forceful tale telling in the fourth installment.
