Ed Kennedy is an underage cabdriver lacking much of a future. He’s pathetic at playing cards, hopelessly in like with his best friend, Audrey, and utterly devoted to his coffee-drinking dog, the Doorman. His life is one of peaceful routine and incompetence until he inadvertently stops a bank robbery.
That’s when the first ace arrives in the mail.
That’s when Ed becomes the messenger.
Chosen to care, he makes his way through town helping and hurting (when necessary) until only one question remains: Who’s behind Ed’s mission?
A 2005 Michael L. Printz Honor Book and recipient of five starred reviews, I Am the Messenger is a cryptic journey filled with laughter, fists, and like.

This was one of the best books I’ve ever read. I read The Book Thief first, and thought it was a truly gorgeous book. I didn’t reflect it could get much better. But it did. When I finished I Am The Messenger I truly felt inspired, an ending I wasn’t expecting. I really wish I had read it sooner, because it was truly AMAZING.

I like this book. It is simple to read. The plot is fantastic. I hardly place it down. And the message i get from this book is “You could change the world being an ordinary guy!”

I just finished reading this book about 5 minutes ago, and I was really impressed. I’m an avid reader, and I absolutely like when I find a book that just completely blows me away. This was one of persons books. It’s well written, so unique, and really carries a message. But, I will warn you. This is about the toughest book to place down. I read it in a couple days and I can’t count the number of times I was late for something because I just couldn’t bring myself to close it.
I would recommend this book to anyone. I can’t really place it into words, but it really is fantastic. But, it’s certainly more of a teen book, because it does have a small bit of questionable stuff in it, so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone too young.
You HAVE to read it.

As my title suggests, much, much less than I’d expected.
Having just finished “The Book Thief” by the same leader, I could hardly wait to get my hands this book; sorry to say they are as different as night and day.
The book had an intriguing take in and the tale ongoing reasonably enough, but then quickly became unbelievable with unlikely clues and convenient solutions. Then, to make matters worse, the ending is even more far-fetched than the main tale itself. About half way through, I establish myself starting to skim the chapters (not a excellent sign) just to get finished quicker.
As I sit and write this review I find it hard to judge that the genius that penned “The Book Thief” (a book so deeply moving and gorgeous that I was saddened to see it end) was the same person who wrote this book of such…of such questionable quality.
All in all, I wished I’d passed on this book. 1 Star
Addendum; Aug.18, 2007
Having read additional peoples’ reviews on this book, I marvel if they’ve read “The Book Thief” by the same leader. That book, IMHO, is so superior to ‘I Am the Messenger’ that I still find it hard to judge that both novels were written by the same person.
But, in trying to be objective, I’ve tried to place myself in the position of what I would have thought of ‘I Am the Messenger ‘, IF, I’d not read ‘The Book Thief ‘ first. Honestly, I feel I probably would not have trashed ‘I Am the Messenger’ as I did in my review, but still could not give it anymore than 2 stars.
But, having read ‘The Book Thief’ first, I stand by my critical review of ‘I Am the Messenger ‘.

Hmmmm.
First the premise: Ed is a 19 year ancient taxi driver living a pretty mundane existance until he stops a bank robbery. His life changes when he starts getting anonymous aces in the mail with messages on them that he needs to decipher and carry out.
Next, its a book for young adults and it did win Book of the Year for older readers from The Children’s Book Council of Australia so I suppose thats adage something. But I didn’t delight in this book as much as everyone else seems to have. I establish that everything worked out much too well for Ed and the tale became reasonably predictable. I reflect the book is also a small too long in most places and in the end everything was wrapped up in a clean small package (thats not a spoiler – trust me you could see it coming!)
