So much of this is a rehash of his additional stuff. The photos of how to pick up your dog correctly by the scruff of the neck—now that was eye opening! I’ve tried to provide negative reviews of Cesar before and the reviews mysteriously vanish.
Before you buy the book, watch the show with a pen and paper at hand and write down every useful training tip you can. You can watch it 100 times: it’s all the same show with a different cast. It can be amusing and entertaining but please don’t seriously pay any attention to anything this hack-quack has to say about dogs!
I reflect he has some dog skills. A friend of mine in the animal welfare community worked with Cesar following Katrina and believes he is a really decent human being.
I’m not so sure about his apparent “successes” but it does remind me of the time…
I was around twelve when my pack of dogs (two Salukis, a Collie, a couple of Poodles, a Blue Tic Beagle, a Guide) cornered a deer at the side of a steep hill. With no avenue of escape, the deer turned to fight. The dogs all suddenly had that expression which said, “what?”
The dumbest, or at least most “hunt” oriented of the pack, a blue tic hound got in close and promptly got the tar kicked out of him. He lived out his years with a droopy scar on his lower lip. His yelps of pain and surprise changed the whole dynamic.
The prey had suddenly become a potential predator. The dog pack backed off just long enough to allow the deer to escape.
I judge dogs are smart enough to reflect, when faced with a predator ,”what the heck do I need to do to survive this encounter?”
So, is it not possible, when confronted with a menacing, all jacked up, goateed, hulking over them, ex- illegal alien dog groomer, that they see PREDATOR, and elect to do whatever they need to do to survive the encounter?

Mr. Milan is a very scary fellow. He is using techniques way beyond his ability (mostly a training technique called “flooding”). Seriously, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!! If you have any doubt, Google Cesar Milan, lawsuits. You do NOT have to tough your dogs!

I am so sorry I wasted my money on this book. The first 50 pages were about how he selected out 5 dogs–I am only interested in one. Also that was the topic of his first dog whisper show on NG, so if you saw that one didn’t need to buy the book. Ready to return and sell used.

I was so excited to get this book, having read all of Cesar Millan’s previous books. It was to some extent of a disappointment but, in that so much information is repeated from additional books. I had hoped for something NEW from Mr. Millan that would give better insights on managing puppies.

Cesar’s New Book “How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond”
Is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it
I would certainly consider seeking out adoption from a reputable rescue organization for a pure bred pup. Shelters contain 30% purebred dogs on average, and in some parts of the country more. The Hows and whys
As Cesar points out in this book, the pitfalls of buying from a pet store, as no reputable breeder, ever, ever sells to a petstore or over the internet ad.
The hows and whys are outlined in this book, and it is an simple read. Very excellent for all potential puppy owners, and persons with a new puppy!
