This preface, though placed at the beginning, as a preface must be, should be read at the end of the book. I have received a large amount of correspondence concerning this tiny work, and many reviews of it–some of them nearly as long as the book itself–have been printed. But scarcely any of the comment has been adverse. Some people have objected to a frivolity of tone; but as the tone is not, in my opinion, at all frivolous, this objection did not impress me; and had no weightier reproach been place forwards I might nearly have been persuaded that the volume was flawless! A more serious stricture has, but, been offered–not in the press, but by sundry obviously sincere correspondents- -and I must deal with it. A reference to page 43 will show that I anticipated and feared this disapprobation. The sentence against which protests have been made is as follows:– “In the majority of instances he [the predictable man] does not precisely feel a passion for his business; at best he does not dislike it. He starts his business functions with some reluctance, as late as he can, and he ends them with joy, as early as he can. And his engines, while he is engaged in his business, are seldom at their full ‘h.p.’”

You are basically told to view your allotted 24 hours a day as the number of hours that exist outside of your job, and to spend them doing something that will engage you. Many references to literature. And the leader is English, so be prepared to read words like “programme” versus “job”. Following his use of words and trying to determine the American equivalent was appealing…especially if you’ve not encountered this before.
There are no tips or hints as to how to “save time” doing this as a replacement for of that – or doing it differently – for example: clean a room in your house each day and by the end of the week, you won’t need to spend a day of your weekend cleaning. I was hoping for these types of time-savers – but sorry to say did not see that this was not that type of book. At best, he tells you to use your go back and into the world time on the train to work each day, and back, to reflect on who you are, where you are headed and what makes you pleased. He recommends not wasting that particular lot of time reading the paper – althought he recommends you still fit that in during the day – just not during your go back and into the world?? He focuses on starting with 7+ hours of the week and using them for something that will – again – engage you.
Some valid points. A very fleeting read. But, save your money and locate this book at your local library if you truly wish to read it.

As recommended by William H. Danforth in his “I Dare You” (another brilliant book), this book will help you to get more done in less time. Don’t judge me? Read it! What more is there to say? It works if you’ll only try it.

The greatest thing about this publication is that you are aware of the leader’s opinion, but no bias exists within the material. The suggestions open are done in such a fashion that any revolutions made will seem to be made by you, not the leader. This allows for an objective analysis of your current lifestyle and some possible steps you may wish to take to improve it. I am not one who is usually enlightened or easily motivated, but I can honestly say I judge this book is an asset to all and considering the E-Book is only ($$$), you can’t go incorrect.
Delight in! I hope I was of some help.

Though it was written 90 years ago, “How To Live” addresses the inadequacies, frustrations, disappointments of people today in all walks of life and it does so with humor and wisdom. A daily dose of “How To Live” is at least as wholesome for the brain and soul as a multi-vitamin for the body. Arnold Bennett made a classic of its kind, a self-help book that really helps.

It is hard to imagine that this small book could be so persuasive. I consider it a classic, and an early precusor to many others that have attempted to demonstrate how time is our own and ours to manage and expand our boundaries of our selves. In the thirty minutes it takes to read, you will be left forever vigilant, and will never sit idle, unless you consciously choose to sit idle, while you ride a train, wait for plane, or drive home from what once may have been a routine. Read it, study it, and live again.
