Product Description
The first horseman of the apocalypse is undoubtedly the Internet personal ad. I am not sure why every single one of them is some variation of:
Balding, Paunchy, Twice-Divorced, Unemployed Male Seeks Independently Wealthy Supermodel for No-Strings-Attached fun. Nonsmokers only.
She’s Back, and edgier than ever. In her debut narrative, Drunk, Divorced, & Covered in Cat Hair, blogger extraordinaire Laurie Perry, aka ‘Crazy Aunt Purl,’ gave women everywhere a hilarious yet heartfelt glimpse into her misadventures as a recent divorcee with a herd of cats, a slight wine and Cheetos problem, and scores of unfinished and uneven knitting projects.
Now, in her second installment, she’s no longer drunk-dialing her ex. She is well on her way to divorce recovery and has embraced a new-establish philosophy: To make the best out of the ‘extra odd bits’—both in knitting and in life. Learning how she accomplishes this will make you laugh and weep as she navigates new territory, from dating in a weird, wired world to vacationing solo for the first time. On the cusp of the huge four-O, she ventures to the most exotic, foreign locations—the gym, a therapist’s office, a self-tanning emporium— on a search for enlightenment and happiness in— where else?—downtown Los Angeles.

Absolutely hilarious in some parts. Feels like it was padded in others. There’s a recipe for zucchini. There are over 50 pages of simplistic knitting and crochet patterns following the main text. Lacking them, there would only be 146 pages of tale with extra space between chapters.
The patterns are for a reversible Halloween beanie, an island beach bag, a crocheted toilet seat take in and matching toilet roll take in, a knitted take in for your swiffer (why?), handwarmers (fingerless gloves), quick knit date night bag, felted wine bottle cozy, crocheted coaster, a cozy for your “personal massager,” a crocheted cozy to place on your ice cream when you eat it from the carton, a beret, a braided rug, and the mistake knit rib scarf. It nearly feels insulting. She shows much better knits on her blog. I know she’s trying, but this was a poor effort.

I, like so many others, loved Ms. Perry’s first book, and looked forwards to this one with fantastic anticipation. But, I have just finished it and have to say I am not nearly as fond of this one as her first book.
I was expecting-what??–more personal progress perhaps. More insight to her “issues”. A bit more biting humor. All of that and a bit more.
I just didn’t feel she has progressed all that far in her personal life as I had hoped. Perhaps MY expectations were too high, but I just felt this book was struggling to find humor in certain things. And, I sure wanted a bit more knitting in it. But, again, maybe that’s just ME!!
But, I will still read her blog, and I will still look forwards to her next book.

I wish the titles of Laurie’s books were different–they send the message that the book will be about drinking…maybe too much.
Her books are so much more than that. They make me laugh, they make me tear up, they make me reflect and most of all they make me hopeful. Laurie is a talented writer and self aware–more so every day. She has struggled from the depths of a horrible divorce and establish her courage. For a name I don’t know, except from her books and her blog I am proud as hell of her for where she has journeyed.

Laurie Perry has a knack for pointing out how rich everyday life is when we really pay attention. She’s also amusing. Don’t be frightened off by the wine and the stitching in the title, there’s not too much of either one in the book.
