Amazon.com Review
If you want your notched collars to lie smoothly like Ellen Tracy’s, your pants zippers to be as invisibly fused with the inseam pocket as Giorgio Armani’s, and your topstitched facings to have the impeccable look of Chanel, this is the book to have. Home sewers need and want exactly the kind of painstaking construction tips that Claire B. Shaeffer provides. She not only tells you how to add designer details such as persons mentioned above, but also how to copy any garment, alter a sleeve, change seams to darts or folds (or vice versa), and make a basic pattern. This is one of the best intermediate sewing guides on the market.

Being a fan of Project Runway and a long-time sewer, I was looking forwards to learning persons “secrets” of the world’s best designers. Ha! I wish I had thought to write the book because I already knew them all. My mom (not a designer or a professional seamstress) taught my sister and me in the 1950s and 1960s everything that’s in the book and what she didn’t (the serger stuff) I taught myself. My sister and I laughed ourselves silly at the “secrets”–bound buttonholes? piping? facings? I do feel sorry for all of the people who want to sew, weren’t taught by my mother, and can’t read pattern instructions, but for me? What a waste of money.

I admit I haven’t read much of it. Just skimmed through it. It’s just reasonably hard to read…too technical (excellent for persons who like things technical ..I”m a more visual person) and too much information in one seating. But it’s worthwhile to take time to study it once I’ve got more time on my hand.

being a fasion student in America I look for any resource that I can find pertaining to real Haute Couture, but this book was a real disappointment. It basically has everything that I’ve already learned expect for the roses thats a pretty excellent thought. But for home sewers its absolutely PERFECT! Home sewers will really get alot of experence from this book.
