Product Description
The first in an epic two-book saga by beloved leader Francine Rivers, this sweeping tale explores the intricate relationships between mothers and daughters over several generations. Near the turn of the 20th century, fiery Marta leaves Switzerland determined to find life on her own terms. Her journey takes her through Europe and finally lands her with children and spouse in tow in the central valley of California. Marta’s experiences convince her that only the strong survive. Hildie, Marta’s oldest daughter, has a heart to serve others, and her calling as a nurse gives her independence, if not the respect of her mother. Amid the drama of WWII, Hildie marries and starts a family tree of her own. She wants her daughter never to doubt her like—but the challenges of life conspire against her vow. Each woman is forced to confront her faulty but well-meaning desire to help her daughter find her God-agreed place in the world.

In 1901 Marta Schneider leaves her family tree behind in Steffisburg, Switzerland as she refuses to tolerate her Papa’s abuse towards her frail Mama, older brother, younger sister and her. As a replacement for she plans to make it as an independent woman. She travels to Europe and crosses the ocean to Canada. Eventually she buys a boardinghouse. She meets kind hearted German engineer Niclas Waltert.
The pair marries, crosses the Atlantic and works hard together while raising in a nice California lifestyle their three children. But, Marta thinks their oldest offspring Hildemara Rose is more like her cowardly motherly grandmother than her. Still she is surprised when Hildemara insists she wants to serve as a nurse during WWII because Mama knows her oldest child never displays her independence; Hildemara wants to gain the respect of her idol, her courageous Mama Marta.
This is an appealing family tree drama that focuses on a Mama and her oldest daughter in the first half of the twentieth century. The two women are fully developed while Niclas and the additional two children serve as levelheaded support players enhancing the understating of Marta and Hildemara. Although too many of the major events of the decades are highlighted so at times overwhelm the cast, fans will delight in this fine epic as courage comes in many differing ways.

I have read every book Rivers has written. It’s honest to say I’m a huge fan of her books, but, what gripped me with the book was just the QUALITY and DEPTH of her actual writing skills. We all know Rivers can tell excellent tales, but… man. The quality of the writing shown here — dialogue, scenery, events, everything– is just unparalleled. Rivers is heads about her peers in this regard, and that combined with her incredible storytelling ability, is what will keep loyal fans coming back as long as she continues to write.

It really sort of broke my heart, or broke me open to God in a fresh way. Tears have rolled down my cheeks a few times!
Nervously awaiting the sequel~

Marta is driven by ambition and guilt. Hilde is the antithesis of her mother. Neither knows how to communicate their heart. As powerful as Redeeming Like, Her Mother’s Hope will give every woman, who has been a mother or a daughter, hope for mending the rifts in their relationship, no matter how deep the apportion, how devastating the mistakes, like has the power to heal. Novel Journey and I give Her Mother’s Hope our highest recommendation. It’s a 5 star read.
