These are with out a doubt the ugliest hats I have ever seen. How many adults wear hats with tie chin straps? There are several of persons styles. And all but a few are made of chunky yarn, large needles and no shaping or style. And now many adult women want a hugh pom pom on the top of their hat, or dangling off the back. Yuck, save your money and buy a book where you will learn to knit a hat with detail shaping and style. These hats look like what kids wore in the 50’s sized to fit adults.

I was in a hat knitting mood when this book was unrestricted. With so many hat designs surely I would find something just right for a lace lover who prefers fingering to dk weight yarns. Not a chance! If odd, trendy, even weird headgear and bulky yarns are your thing, then this book is for you. If you are searching for classic, elegant, or refined hats for everyday use do what I did and look elsewhere. With so many hats, there wasn’t anything for me to wear here.

The hats are… appealing and creative… and probably unwearable for any adult woman who isn’t using the hat as a costume or prop. The models and photographs are very pretty, but I don’t reflect I would ever wear most of these hats. (And I have a honestly goofy sense of style and I live in San Francisco, so that’s adage a lot.) And a few of them are downright fugly. And why so many pointy caps on the hats??? They look silly like an elf or garden gnome cap. I might try 1 or 2 of these patterns, but I’ll probably change the decreases so that the top of the hat doesn’t end up so tall and pointy.

I delight in knitting hats and wanted a book with lots of really fantastic patterns. This title caught my eye, I had fantastic hopes for it. Boy am I ever glad I saw it at the bookstore before committing to buy it. Flipping through this book, I reflect there are maybe 3 I might consider building, but none were inspiring enough for me to say “I must have this!” And many of them were absolutely not anything I would wear or gift. Sometimes, many times, I am willing to buy a book or a magazine for 1 or two patterns. This time I was not. You would be much better off checking it out from the library or looking for samples from this book on Ravelry before buying it. I was disappointed.
