Comics & graphic novels based on movies and video games can be a bit simplistic … doing small more than giving you back on the printed page the same sort of experience you got from watching the film or playing the game. ‘Halo: Blood Line’ surprisingly does a pretty excellent job of trying to deliver something different to Halo fans.
(I’ll try to avoid spoilers here as much as I can.) By setting up the plot as something of a side-tale, the creative team is agreed a excellent deal of freedom to explore thoughts & themes that just wouldn’t fit well into a Halo game. What would it be like to grow up in a Spartan training camp? What would the psychological impact be on young impressionable minds subjected to intense military training & medical augmentation procedures? Are the Covenant Elites nothing more than pure evil killing machines with no redeeming values? Might there be any common ground between Spartans & Elites?
‘Halo: Blood Line’ was a very enjoyable read, though perhaps a bit predictable in spots. The art was complementary to the tale (in particular, the artist is *very* excellent with architectural & equipment renderings). So I give it 4 stars overall.

I like comics and I like Halo, Bloodline gave me a mediocre dose of both.
The tale is okay and the writing itself is decent. The art is average, completely forgettable but not terrible. Dull character design, and as we see with Halo: Reach Spartans can vary in armor style but in this they are dull. The pages are really busy and crowded.
There is certainly a lack of imagination with the tale. Want to read a fantastic, maybe even epic tale about the Halo-verse? Well, go somewhere else because this is another tale about a tiny group of people that in no way effect anything in the covenant-human war. This is about four over emotional Spartans that have a tiny side tale that isn’t really that appealing or impacting.
You want a excellent Halo comic, check out Helljumpers. This is pretty much for the hardcore fan like me that wants everything Halo thats middle decent.
