Anita Blake may be tiny and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law–as long as they don’t get too grave. Now a name’s killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees–with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting–to help figure out who and why.
Trust is a luxury Anita can’t afford when her allies aren’t human. The city’s most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years ancient and looks like a 10-year-ancient girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita’s professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn’t playing along–yet. This well loved series has a wild energy and humor, and some very appealing characters–both dead and alive.

so, i had to read this book for my Literature of Horror class, and i have to say that of ALL the books i’ve been forced to read over the course of my education, this is lacking a doubt the WORST book i’ve ever read (forcefully or willingly.)
the writing is on par with that of an 8th grade autism case. the repetition is so annoying that you just want to slap the protagonist across the face each time she repeats herself. “edward had a blank face.” “naw.”
when reading this, i kept thinking about how Dickens wrote only for the purpose of a check. this invalid obviously does the exact same thing. both writer’s possess no capability to make a character spring off of the page and seem as real as the seat you’re sitting in.
and i mean, come one, seriously, how ancient is the “independent, strong, self reliant” female hero? i’m not sexist in the least bit, the whole lone male hero is ancient too, but this is just so terrible that it gave me headaches. “maybe i care, probably not.” oh man, what a hardas s.
so, overall, with this being the first and FINAL hamilton book i ever even so much as look at, all i can really say is, in terms of horror literature, Lovecraft is rolling over in his grave.

after reading *dead until dark and living dead in dallas* by:Charlaine Harris..i searched for the same kinda tales..and read that Laurell K. Hamilton’s books are even better..so i gave it a try after reading the reviews..i couldnt end the book..it was so dull..and alot of discription just to fill the pages..i was skipping all the pages tryin to find somethin appealing to read….it was really a dull book i did not like it at all…maybe cus it was her first book..but ill give her additional chapters a try….i cant hardly wait for Charlaine Harris 3rd book.

This book was slow-moving and had way to many pop references.

I bought Guilty Pleasures at the recommendation of a co-worker. He is a fan of the Anita Blake series and thought I’d get into it too. The background is well written and defined, but the characters are shallow and sexual thought/desire/memories/plans simply take up too much dialogue and the plot drags along. I’ll avoid the rest of the series.
