Product Description
Defense attorney Paul Madriani gets caught in a web of deceit and murder involving Cold War secrets, a rare coin dealer who once worked for the CIA, and a furious assassin in one of the most entertaining novels yet in this New York Times bestselling series.
A woman pauses in the hallway of a darkened San Diego beach house at night—listening for just the right moment when she can flee before her companion notices that she’s gone.
A man outside watches the same mansion, waiting for a sign that he can enter on his mission of blood and carnage.
So starts this riveting new tale about Paul Madriani and his latest case—that of Katia, a woman accused of an unlikely crime—a examination that will unravel a careful but horrifying conspiracy. Madriani soon realizes that he’s signed onto something much more sinister than a botched heist. As he searches for the truth that will clear Katia’s name, he finds himself on a path that takes him from Southern California to Costa Rica, and, ultimately, to a secret buried since Castro’s rise to power.
Together with his partner, Harry Hinds, Madriani must piece together the threads of a decades-ancient conspiracy involving priceless gold coins, an aging American spy, a disaffected Russian soldier, and a forgotten weapon from the days of JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis. As the separate strands of the tale come together, Madriani finds information that will ultimately lead him to the one person who holds the key to it all: a man some call “The Guardian of Lies.”
In this fascinating thriller from New York Times bestselling leader Steve Martini, Paul Madriani faces his most challenging—and most urgent—case yet, a breathless tale that combines fact and fiction and will hold readers captive until its final, explosive conclusion.

What’s with the Kindle fee on Guardian Of Lies? I invested in the Kindle for connivence, to save natural resources and because the fee of a first-run ebook is $9.99. The fee of this book is only $2.35 cheaper than it’s hardcover clone. Get greedy with prices and I won’t buy. The reviews on this book are a “so-so”, but the fee on this book is a thumbs-down! Paul Madriani see if you can solve the pricing problem!

I am a huge fan of Steve Martini, and have read all the Paul Madriani books in order. In each of the ten thrillers, the action and suspense grow more intense. “Guardian of Lies” does not disappoint. After Madriani has a chance encounter with a gorgeous young Costa Rican woman (Katia) all hell breaks loose. She’s living with a creepy older man who deals in valuable gold coins and has hidden ulterior motives. He is being cased by La Liquida, AKA the Mexicutioner, who is horrifyingly excellent at his job. The night Katia escapes from the decrepit mansion is the very night the Mexicutioner comes after her sugar daddy, and kills him. Katia, of course, is fingered in the crime, and Madriani, because of his earlier chance encounter, becomes her attorney.
Madriani and Harry Hinds start to work on her defense, but details grow murkier and weirder with every passing day. It’s a conspiracy so involved and circuitous that you may find yourself retracing your reading footsteps to collect all the details, of which there are plenty. Add to the mix a long-forgotten weapon from the Bay of Pigs, Castro reminiscences, an escaped Guantanamo prisoner leading a band of rebels in South America, an aging Russian soldier with the knowledge to deploy the weapon and shared DNA with Katia, some CIA intervention, and the aforementioned Mexicutioner, you’ll be reading this one into the wee hours of the morning.
The only question is… where can Martini go next?

Downloaded Guardian of Lies to my Kindle and establish it hard to place down. Another winner from Martini. I would have paid more for the hardcover edition at a bookstore, and I appreciate the convenience of my Kindle. I fail to know why prices have risen so drastically, but this book was worth the 9.99!

Every aspiring writer (or book reviewer) should have a copy of this novel. The base plot is simple and tiny: terrible guys get a suitcase nuke and plot to blow it up on the West Coast. That takes maybe 20% of the novel. All the rest is a series of intricate sub-plots (no one of which really has much to do with the terrible guys or the nuke). But the reader is swept along from one exciting scene to another (much like Mission Impossible) and introduced to memorable characters. Steve Martini demonstrates a dazzling proficiency in writer’s craft, and this novel could be used to teach fiction-writing.

Fascinatingly intricate tale erect up and the Madriani character is one of my favorites. Once again he is clever, yet human, and like a modern day Perry Mason (my mom’s favorite before mine) in my opinion. I have loved all the Madriani episodes, but this may be the best yet.
