Product Description
An eye-opening and fascinating journey from an acclaimed travel writer who circled the globe lacking ever leaving the ground.
In this age of globalism and high-speed travel, Seth Stevenson, the witty, thoughtful Slate travel columnist, takes us back to a time when travel meant putting one foot in front of the additional, racing to make relations between trains and buses in remote transit stations, and wading through the chaos that most long-haul travelers float 35,000 feet above. Stevenson winds his way around the world by biking, walking, hiking, riding in rickshaws, goods ships, cruise ships, very ancient ferries, buses, and the Trans-Siberian Railway-but never gets on an airplane.
He finds that from the ground, one sees the world anew-with a deeper understanding of time, distance, and the vastness of the planet. In this sensational travelogue, each step of the journey is an adventure, full of unexpected revelations in every new port, at every bend in the railroad tracks, and around every street confront.

Although there are some witty moments this travelogue is alcohol-soaked and dull. I don’t even reflect Mr Stevenson would be a very excellent traveling companion. Too many brassy expressions dot this narrative as well.

I could only read through the first 100 pages and then I had to stop. I’ve traveled around the world myself and have lived for several years out of backpack tramping through Oz, NZ, Europe, Asia and the US and I’m about to embark on a multi-year journey through Central and South America. I bought this book with several others just to help get back into the traveler mindset.
I have to say, at least for the first half, this is one dull journey and most likely further justifies to others from the States that traveling, as opposed to vacationing, is not worth the hassle.
The leader spends many pages extolling the virtues of any additional method of transport except for flying and then spends just as many pages either complaining about the conditions on various ferries or trying desperately to highlight his dull trip with lame anecdotes. Truthfully, it seems as through the leader has a dread of flying and trotted out every excuse in the book for sitting for two dull weeks on a ferry as a replacement for of taking a flight. Why? Because it’s much more “authentic” to be bored and lonely than it is to be cramped for a few hours and doing something legitimately appealing.
Beyond his aversion to flying is the simple fact that they don’t do anything of interest or worthy of writing about for at least the first 100 pages. Girls playing card games on a ship, a shipmate with pinups on his walls, an expensive ferry ride with no beds and stinky feet and waiting in line for a museum because the ticket machine is broken. These are the “highlights” of the journey.
I wanted to like this book, but I didn’t.

Some people should never visit a foreign country
and Mr. Stevenson is one of them.
He has nothing appealing and nice to say about
any of the countries he visited nor their citizens.
Furthermore, I don,t buy a book to be constantly
told about his alcohol intake and hangovers.
It was the most dull travel book I ever read.

This was a rather disappointing book. I had heard it reviewed on an NPR show that I respect and was therefore very surprised that I didn’t find this book very excellent at all. I reads like a high schooler trying to prove he can use a thesaurus. Beyond that there is no real theme additional than his own selfish need fulfillment. He constantly puts space between himself and the people around him with insulting putdowns. Besides that the only thing they do is ride in things additional than airplanes and drink liquor. There seems to be no real sense of connecting with the place they are in. Issues like poverty seem to have no effect on these two travelers, who make no effort to see the world through eyes additional than there own. The whole thing smacks of privilege, and disconnect.

Cheer to all the people who are not worried to follow their hearts. An inspiring book! My wife and I are now preparation our own trip around the world, not reasonably the same way the writer did, but still a journey to last a lifetime….
