Product Description
The mesmerizing biography of one of the world’s richest, most intriguing women—philanthropist and socialite Lily Safra
In the early morning of December 3, 1999, Lily Safra stood shivering in her nightgown on the grounds outside her sumptuous Monte Carlo penthouse where, just hours before, her fourth spouse, ascetic billionaire Edmond Safra, died in a fire. An American nurse employed by the Safra family tree was eventually convicted of the arson death. Overnight, Lily became one of the wealthiest widows in the world.
The Brazilian-born Lily Safra was no weirder to tragedy. In 1969, her second spouse, the Brazilian multimillionaire Alfredo Monteverde, died from two gunshots to the chest. The Brazilian authorities ruled it a suicide. In 1989, her beloved eldest son and four-year-ancient grandson died in a car manufacturing accident. But just who is Lily Safra? Despite having become a fixture in society columns for her generous charity work and lavish parties, the elegant and enigmatic widow has remained in the background.
Gilded Lily tells Lily Safra’s tale for the first time. Using archival sources, court documents, and interviews with childhood friends and ex- employees in South America, investigative journalist Isabel Vincent chronicle’s Safra’s rise from humble origins in Brazil to fabled wealth in London, New York, and Monaco.

I bought this book for my Kindle hoping to read about a wealthy woman and who lives in a world completely different than my own. What I got was mean spirited gossip and half baked innuendos about what a terrible person Lily Safra is. The book is so slanted against Mrs. Safra and so mean that it was unenjoyable.

What a waste of time and money. This book does not go in depth in anything, I reflect I knew as much about Lily Safra before I read it as I did after. 20% of the book is references, which may be the only reason I finished the main part of the book as it was so dull.

I establish this to be a fascinating book mostly for the detailed information it provides on history of banking and industry in South America, the history of the Jewish population in South America, and insight into the social classes, etc. While reading this book, I never got the impression that Lily Safra was being gossiped about or maligned in any way. I establish this portrait of her to be balanced and, while it did mention things that may be construed as unflattering, it wasn’t anything the leader made up — it was information that had already been made public. Like another reviewer, after reading this book, I really reflect that Mrs. Safra has led a very appealing life, and I do have much sympathy for her as she’s endured the loss of many loved ones and has managed to survive with fantastic dignity the overwhelming grief that persons losses surely caused her.

I loved reading this book about Lily Safra very much and cannot know why the previous reviews were so negative. It was very informative and very well written book. I thought it gave a very excellent overall insight into her life and I never felt she was a terrible person and felt much sympathy for her. Her life tale is a very fascinating read.

I just finished this book and I thought it was fantastic read.. read it in a few days…I don’t see the negatives the additional readers might have but I establish it simple and informative…In the end I didn’t much care for Lily I skipped over some parts I was familiar with from Dominick Dunne RIP…I probably would never have heard of Lily Safra if it was not for Mr, Dunne. I establish his writing very entertaining. I have also loved this book…..
