I establish a 1955 printing of this book in an ancient waterfront cabin and was struck by the care with which the previous owner had read it. Eve (the name inscribed inside the front take in and then again above the heading for chapter 3) made pencil inscription on nearly every paragraph of the book, underlining a axiom, highlighting many passages with strong vertical inscription, scratching out some words that she seems to have establish superfluous and even x-ing out whole sections that rumor has it that missed their mark with her altogether. Two rusting paper clips isolate several pages, absent any marking at all. Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s lyrical words are still significant and presage so many of the themes of today’s most well loved books: simplicity, peaceful solitude, caring for the soul, a woman finding her place in society and life. I heard that the woman who had lived in the cabin had really passed away some time before. Thank you, Eve, for your gift… from the sea.

The 50th Anniversary Edition would have been a nice book with a gorgeous take in design, except the paper book take in was very wrinkled. It made for a disappointing gift. It was not wrinkled in transit but due to poor quality control at Amazon.

This is supposedly a self-help classic, but I wouldn’t want to turn to it in a time of need. The writing is schlocky and the book is full of vague generalizations lacking concrete examples. I was looking for a passage to use as a reading in my wedding ceremony, having seen excerpts of this book online. I certainly didn’t want such terrible writing to be a part of my huge day.

This book was last months book club read. While I reflect Anne Morrow Lindbergh was yet to be of her time, I loved her daughter’s introduction to the book more. It was worth reading but it wasn’t my favorite type of book.

This book came very highly recommended by two friends who are avid book readers. But I despise to admit that the book did not go me as much as my friends claimed that it stirred them. I was more interested about the background references to the leader’s personal life and how the book came into being. That I would have read voraciously. The book is fleeting but I don’t intend to read it again to see what I missed. I judge a book either moves you or it doesn’t. This particular book despite additional rave reviews did not go me despite my fantastic affinity for the sea and women writers. I marvel if perhaps if the book would have touched me differently if I read it in the beach rather than on a plane which I did.
