This is another fantastic addition to anyone who is directly involved with the crafty of homes. I would fervently recommend that builders who reflect they know it all, read this before they slap together another mistake on our horizon. This book is clear and direct in it’s purpose of building us all aware of why buildings look “right”; and why so many buildings look “incorrect.”

What a fantastic book. This is the kind of thing that I wish I had establish years ago. I and a scenic designer but I reflect that it could be a stable part of a library for a interior designer, architect or home owner. This book gets right down to work with hundreds of drawings. How helpful to have errors of proportion beside right interpretations of classic fundamentals. I like gorgeous pictures of traditional homes, but having precise drawings of the excellent the terrible and the hideous is a unique approach to a design book.

I whole-heartedly agree with the positive reviews this book has loved in these reviews. The drawings are clear, the writing direct and the principles outlined concisely stated. I would note that the leader received a distinguished architectural prize in the area of practical design last year. The book sets into the world the reasons some buildings look “right” and others just look “incorrect” based upon proportion, massing and use of fundamentals (such as columns, entablature, arches, etc. or their latter day representations in the vocabulary of building). While the principles of classical architecture are readily applicable to and easily appreciated in tie with building styles that most directly use the classical fundamentals, these principles nonetheless have application to most traditional forms but they may be styled, so long as attention is payed to the basis for variation in a agreed style (e.g., asymmetry in the case of medieval-derived styles, vs. symmetry in the more classically derived). Anyone who has wondered what gives this house “excellent bones” or why does this building make me feel terrible will find the answers in this wonderful book.
