It’s rare for a business book to be such a compelling read. I expected to read about a name else’s train wreck, and then I saw myself in nearly every chapter.
Even though I am a successful business owner, reading this book made me realize how many behaviors have held me back or kept me from my full potential–and probably would have resulted in being a lot more profitable.
Dr. Mark Goulston combines tangible and practical advise with inspirational quotes and engaging anecdotes. Seeing how additional professionals were able to overcome their childhood terrible habits was instrumental and motivating.
The leader is a gifted writer who is able to take complex behaviors and identify the simple, salient features which can be changed to effect real change. This should be required reading for MBA’s.

Mark captures our spirit with his tales and simple to follow “usable insights” like no additional coach! His use of simple to follow principles and excellent humor make the reader stay tuned and engaged. I like the tales as well as the exercises. As a coach myself- I like to hand people something useful! Mark makes this task “a gift” for me to give everytime I see a client. Recently, I gave this material to SWAT TEAM leaders at a county wide program because these folks need quick access to information that makes a difference in their everyday lives. I could not reflect of a better way to help others reflect through the difficulty of “being a better human being” than Get Out of Your Own Way at Work….I can even apply it myself!

Get Out of Your Own Way at Work…And Help Others Do the Same by Mark Goulston is a quick, palatable read on a variety of failings that might beset you or a colleague at work. Procrastination, not taking No for an answer, and staying too long in a job you should place are just 3 of the 40 items covered in the book. Each item has an anecdote to give it 3-d clarity, helpful tips, and a quote. All in all the fleeting chapters provide a excellent snapshot of what the problem is and some strategies to take up it.
Goulston made a very well-organized book and seems to know his stuff. While I liked the breadth of it, I wanted to go deeper on each, even if it meant leaving some out. But that’s my inclination. This is a excellent book for the reference shelf when you find yourself stuck in a work rut or managing a hard team member. You can get some quick tips and inspiration here.
