I really loved Jacinto’s Remnant, and thought Aspho Fields was decent, but was really disappointed with Anvil Gate.
I didn’t really feel like the flashback parts added much to the overall backstory of the game universe (even as a name interested in the Gears universe). While the book did some basic setup as a bridge between Jacinto’s Remnant and Gears 3, I really felt like I would’ve been just as pleased skipping it and watching a 30 second cutscene to setup what happened to the COG. I just don’t feel like anything really significant happened overall.
If you’re wondering what happened between Gears 2 and 3, pick up a copy of Jacinto’s Remnant, it’s fantastic, but pass on Anvil Gate.

The last two Gears of Wars novels by Karen Traviss: Aspho Fields, and Jacinto’s Remnant were fantastic levelheaded novels because the both mending the lost void from the games. Anvil Gate doesn’t have a game to back it up and it falls way fleeting. Before you complain, I know there’s game demo preview of Anvil Gate in Gears of War 3. Anvil Gate doesn’t tie into any type of game, but Karen Traviss has to clarify more of the characters than really content.
I really can’t clarify any pros because there’s none. Karen Traviss clarifies more about Adam Fenix than the actual title of book, Anvil Gate. I lost interest reading after a couple of chapters of nothingness. Traviss kept on explaining the same thing over and over again. Anvil Gate should of be unrestricted after Gear of War 3, so it could clarify the missing tale of the game; like the additional two novels. Leader and publishers wanted to pump it out to make a quick buck and it failed. Go buy the additional two novels: Aspho Fields, and Jacinto’s Remnant, since they clarify the same concepts in Anvil Gate. Anvil Gate is 50 pages more than Jacinto’s Remnant, which is 50 pages too much of explaining. Fail.
