Product Description
Recalling the temperamental violence of the early novels of Cormac McCarthy and Denis Johnson, a dark and visceral debut set along the seedy wastelands of Galveston by a young writer with a hard edge to his potent literary style
On the same day that Roy Cady is diagnosed with a mortal illness, he senses that his boss, a treacherous loan-sharking bar-owner, wants him dead. Known “lacking affection” to members of the boss’s crew as “Huge Country” on account of his long hair, beard, and cowboy boots, Roy is alert to the possibility that a routine assignment could be a deathtrap. Which it is. Yet what the would-be killers do to Roy Cady is not the same as what he does to them, which is to say that after a smoking ripple of violence, they are mostly dead and he is mostly alive. Before Roy makes his getaway, he realizes there are two women in the apartment, one of them still breathing, and he sees something in her frightened, defiant eyes that causes a fateful choice. He takes her with him as he goes on the run from New Orleans to Galveston, Texas—an action as ill-advised as it is inescapable. The girl’s name is Rocky, and she is too young, too tough, too sexy—and far too much distress. Roy, Rocky, and her sister hide in the battered panorama of Galveston’s country-western bars and fleabag hotels, a world of treacherous drifters, pickup trucks, and ashed-out hopes. Any chance that they will find safety there is soon lost. Rocky is a girl with reasonably a tale to tell, one that will pursue and hurt Roy for a very long time to come in this powerful and atmospheric thriller, impossible to place down. Constructed with maximum tension and haunting aftereffect, written in darkly gorgeous prose, Galveston announces the arrival of a major new literary talent.

I HAVE READ THE PREVIOUS REVIEWS AND WILL TRY TO NOT REPEAT WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN WRITTEN. I WILL SAY I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH ALL OF THE AMAZING REVIEWS THIS NOVEL HAS RECEIVED. I HAVE 4 CHILDREN-3 ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 7. I FINISHED THIS NOVEL IN 4 DAYS. I FOUND MYSELF READING WHILE COOKING, BRINGING THE BOOK WITH ME WHILE I WAITED FOR THE GIRLS DANCE CLASSES TO END, AND STAYING UP LATE READING JUST TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT GALVESTON IS THE TOTAL UNPREDICTABILITY OF WHAT OCCURS THROUGHOUT THE NOVEL. I DID NOT READ IT HOPING TO FINISH SO I “COULD SEE HOW IT ENDS”. MR PIZZOLATTO WRITES IN A EXTREMELY UNIQUE AND EXCEPTIONAL WAY THAT YOU ARE COMPLETELY IMMERSED THRU THE ENTIRE NOVEL.
I, ALSO, APPRECIATED THE HONEST, USUALLY UNRECOGNIZED, TRUTH OF THE SOUTH. I GREW UP IN THE SOUTH AND MOVED SEVERAL TIMES–INCLUDING OTHER COUNTRIES–SINCE GRADUATING FROM UNIVERSITY. IT WAS NOT UNTIL AFTER I WAS GONE THAT I BEGAN TO GRASP JUST HOW COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IT REALLY IS. I AM AN AVID READER AND I HAVE READ MANY NOVELS BASED IN THE SOUTH (INCLUDING SOUTHERN AUTHORS AND DIFFERENT GENERES). I WOULD LOVE THE BOOK, BUT ALMOST ALWAYS THINK THIS IS NOT REALLY A TRUE DEPICITION OF WHAT IT IS ACTUALLY LIKE THERE. THERE ARE MANY PRECONCIEVED NOTIONS OF THE SOUTH FROM IGNORANT AND RACIST TO WELL-MANNERED AND PROPER. IT USUALLY APPEARS TO ME THAT AUTHORS WRITE WITH SOMETHING SIMILAR TO ONE OF THOSE SCENEARIOS. IN ACTUALALITY IT IS SO MUCH MORE AND SO MUCH LESS THAN SUCH TYPICAL AND TRITE SCENARIOS. THIS IS THE FIRST NOVEL WHERE I FELT LIKE EVEN IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE SOUTH YOU REALLY WILL HAVE A TRUE VISION OF HOW AND WHAT IT IS. HOW COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IT WILL ALWAYS BE FROM ANYWHERE ELSE.
I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED SUCH SUBMERSIVE AND AUTHENTIC WRITING. I HONESTLY BELIEVE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE INTANGIBLE THINGS MR PIZZOLATTO SUCCEEDS IN DOING IN GALVESTON SOMEONE MUST BE BORN WITH AN UNBELIEVABLY RARE TALENT. GALVESTON IS NOT ANOTHER GREAT NOVEL WRITTEN BY ANOTHER GREAT AUTHOR. IT IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A STORY BEING TOLD. BEING THAT I AM NOT “ÄNOTHER GREAT AUTHOR” IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO MAKE SOMEONE ELSE COMPREHEND WHAT I AM TRYING TO CONVEY IN THIS REVIEW. I BELIEVE ONE OF MY FIRST SENTENCES SUMS IT UP: “I HAVE 4 CHILDREN-3 OF WHICH ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 7″–FREE TIME IS RARE AND BEING ABLE TO READ AND COMPLETE A BOOK IS A TRUE LUXURY. I TOOK THE TIME TO WRITE A REVIEW SIMPLY BECAUSE I WAS SO INCREDIBLY MOVED READING IT, HAD NOT HEARD OF IT, AND ONLY PICKED IT UP BASED ON A FRIEND’S RECCOMENDATION.
THIS IS MR PIZZOLATTO’S 1ST NOVEL AND I BELIEVE IT WILL BECOME AN ENOURMOUSLY SUCCESSFUL WORK. I SINCERELY HOPE THIS IS BUT THE FIRST OF MANY NOVELS WRITTEN BY HIM. I DID DISCOVER HE HAS A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES PUBLISHED
‘BETWEEN HERE AND THE YELLOW SEA’ THAT I JUST ORDERED OFF OF AMAZON.

I’m a public library director and read a lot of books; GALVESTON, but, is the first one that has stirred me to bother with a comment. I read this in one 4 hr. sitting–simply could not stop until the end.

Not much to add to the additional favorable reviews. This book grabbed me from the start and I stayed up late one night to end it. Buy it. Read it. you won’t be disappointed.

I reflect others have said it all; I just want to chime in; just having read Don Winslow’s “Savages” and James Lee Burke’s “Galss Rainbow.” They pale in comparison to this book. I hope that Nic PIzzolato keeps putting stuff out like this. He’s at the top of my list!

this novel is so compelling that i read it in four days, then went back and read it again. roy, rocky, tiffany and the gaggle of characters infiltrating their lives are perfectly (and accurately) rendered. this is a fantastic book for anyone who enjoys a excellent mystery as mr. pizzolatto keeps his cards close until it’s time to play them. i establish one moment of crassness (when roy encounters an ex in dallas) that seemed unnecessary and a bit juvenile, but it was just a distraction for me. very enjoyable read, particularly during hurricane season!
