Looks like a pretty darned excellent book to me! This 757 page version from 2010 is loaded with color photos and maps to help you choose where you want to go and how to get there. It covers Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Maui, Hawaii, and Lanai. It follows with tons of additional info about what’s there.
I’m sure everything has changed since I went in 1972, but I recommend 2 weeks. About 5 days on Oahu for the tourist stuff, 1 day for Kauai, several days to tour Hawaii (the Huge Isle) where the volcano park is, and several days to delight in Maui (my favorite–a quieter place).
I know nothing about Lanai, but that is where the book is especially helpful. It tells you that Lanai is basically a huge defunct pineapple plantation with a tiny town feel. It was small more than a tiny village until 1990 when a huge hotel opened there and it became a trip spot for the rich and powerful. But it still has dramatic beauty, silent, solitude, snorkeling, hiking, whale watching and much more. The book continues with a map, pinpointing where the “stuff” is, more history, ways to get there and who to contact, visitor information contact, a brief synopsis of the island (3 parts and a small about each), contact numbers for rental cars and taxis, where to stay (including ratings and contact info and a synopsis), broken down into expensive/moderate categories.
Dining information follows, ranging from very expensive to inexpensive. (I guess my steak and lobster special from 1972 is long gone
Next is a segment listing beaches, rating them and discussing them, followed by information on watersports, hiking and camping, golf, horseback riding, tennis and biking. Sightseeing follows, along with shopping info. Everything is rated and clarified and even includes phone numbers, addresses, and websites of most of the establishments. There is even a Lanai After Dark section. 24 pages are dedicated to the tiny island of Lanai. In contrast, 173 pages are devoted to Oahu (the main tourist area–Honolulu, Diamondhead, and where all the action is–unless it changed.
There is also a nice, covered, comes off fold-out map attached inside the back take in of the islands. This is a real nice book to read yet to be before you go, so you can make your plans well in advance. Then take it with you so you can read up as you travel to the different places on the islands.
BTW–take your camera–I fell in like with the beauty and the colors and the people. The orchids and the anthuriums, and so much more. It was all breathtaking. The people were so warm and friendly too. Beware, you probably will not want to place.

Frommer’s Hawaii 2010 (Frommer’s Color Perfect Guides)
It’s been nearly 15 years since I last visited Hawaii and this book really makes me want to book a trip right now! The book is perfectly sized to travel with you. It’s not pocket sized but it’s compact enough to live in a backpack, medium or larger shoulder bag or a larger camera case. You can also stash it in the glove box of your rental car. Keep it with you when you go. It will be invaluable.
It is very well laid out. The format is well indexed and color coded and there is a liberal dose of gorgeous pictures. There is a also a full sized folding map secured to the rear of the book. Up front there is a list of maps that can prove very helpful. The book starts right off with a well indexed “Best of Hawaii.” All the basics are covered right up front from where to stay and where to eat. It is very well organized and very informative. Some of this section is the featured sample on the Amazon web site. Well worth checking out.
The individual listings are concise and informative. Some of the included information is the phone number, take up, public transport info and prices. It can easily help you plot your visit to the location. Each item also has a star rating that can help you quickly determine if the attraction is worth your time.
This is the book you want to get as you start preparation your trip to the 50th State. Devour it, it is a treasure trove of information. Then pack it and take it with you. I wouldn’t want to go on such a trip lacking it. I did on my first trip, not on my next. There are so many places I missed.

The new Lonely Planet Hawaii series is my favorite of the Hawaii guides. Persons books combine fantastic photography with right islander insight. This book seeks to copy the Lonely Planet look, but relies more on facts than insight. Not a terrible book at all, but I’ll still with Lonely Planet.

I have both Foder’s Hawaii 2010 and this Hawaii 2010 guide by Frommer’s. I certainly prefer this book over Foder’s. I like the over all layout of the book much more and in addition you get a durable tyvek fold-out map with this book. This is a fantastic bargin on Amazon for $14.95!!!
This Frommer’s Hawaii 2010 book includes a separate section for each island, even less traveled Molokai. I really like the “Where to Stay” sections throughout the book. It includes the type of places I like to stay, full kitchen condos and beach-huts and not so much of the expensive high-end touristy resorts. They break out the “Where to Stay” section by areas for each island and include an simple to read map with each location numbered and listed. (It is much simple to follow than the Foder’s Hawaii 2010 book.).
It included the place we stayed on the Kauai (my favorite island), the Waikoma Stream Villas. It is a fantastic bargain as stated in the book. Along with that the rooms are enormous and even include a washer/dryer in the individual units. Although not right “on the beach” it is within walking distance to some fantastic snorkeling and beaches. The book did not include Napili Surf Beach Resort one of my favorite places to stay when I visit Maui. I look forwards to trying some of their recommendation on the Huge Island. When I traveled there I stayed at the Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff in Kailua Kona. I like their accommodations, but my inclination is to stay in a much quieter area.
The book also includes lots of thoughts on sight-seeing, places to dine, along with special experiences unique to each of the island. This book with give you a very excellent all-around over-view of all the islands. Once you figure out which island you want to visit, you may want to pick-up a book for point islands (see additional information section not more than).
My only complaint is that the map is glued into the book and you have to tear-out along the perforation. I was not able to tear it out cleanly and it ripped the map and left a rip on the inside back take in. It would have been better to have the plastic sleeve with Velcro closure as Frommer’s Day-by-Day travel books include. With the tear-out map it’s simple to misplace the map lacking a pocket holder and it constantly falls out of the back as I’m looking at the book.

The Revealed books, individually available for the Huge Island (Hawaii), Maui, and Kauai. If you like snorkeling, I would highly recommend Judy and Mel Malinowski’s books (available for Kauai and the Huge Island). The Lonely Planet books are also my favorites as they are smaller and more compact to bring along with you. Another book that I absolutely like is Budget’s “Maui & Molokai” book by Richard Sullivan. It is a must have if you’re traveling to either of persons islands.
Another brilliant resource is Franko’s Hawaiian map series which I have seen on Amazon or order directly from him on his website. His maps include a ton of information and best places to go on the islands. See his website at frankosmaps dot com.

I have permanently been a huge fan of Frommer’s, but I’m so delighted that this book includes color photos. If you’re going to an area and preparation to stay awhile, Frommer’s is the book to get. We have traveled to many places, and permanently chose Frommer’s.
