Being influenced by this book at an early age robbed me of being distinctly feminine. Boys and girls are different and to deny that is ignorant.

This is a very nice book with fantastic illustrations, but I don’t reflect the suggested age (9-12) is right, it rather should be 4-8 years. I bought it for my 11 years ancient son and he kept asking me while reading why I wanted him so much to read it and that the book is for small kids (I didn’t read the book before). I would say kids today take all these thoughts about being themselves etc as normal and the book may be a small outdated. But for younger kids it is fantastic.

We have the original LP and book from when my now-adult kids were small, but wanted to see the new book as a possible gift for small friends. Even with only 4 songs on the CD, the new book is wonderful. It also has written composition, for piano and melody, for the songs that were on the original CD. (I also ordered the CD containing all of the songs from the original LP.)

I have loved this collection for twenty five + years and have used many parts of it in my second grade classroom to take up many self concept issues. When buying this book again,now as a college professor, I am preparation on using it with my college students studying to be future teachers. There are so many teachable moments within the context of this wonderful book. I bought an additional copy and CD to give as a gift to a small girl so she can start to delight in it as much as I have over the years.

This is an ancient book, 35 years ancient which has been redone, but as significant today as it was back then. It teaches children to be themselves and to be proud of who they are. It also teaches them to let others be themselves. It’s an brilliant addition to any family tree library. It comes with a CD with some of the composition. Charming!
